‘Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom’ Update: Latest From Guillermo Del Toro; Is The Film Good To Go?

One of the higher-grossing mecha films in recent memory, "Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom" is unexpectedly having a hard time getting a green light from Legendary Studios.

Despite having one of the best sci-fi directors around in Guillermo Del Toro, there seems to be risk that they want sorted out first before they go and venture on the sequel.

A report from Hollywood Reporter indicates that Legendary Studios are leaning towards green lighting "Pacific Rim 2L Maelstrom" but they want the risks to be minimized first.

"Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project - which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 - has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all)," as stated in the article.

Meanwhile, Del Toro and his team won't be stopped despite not having any guarantee of the film ever being budgeted. MTV caught up with writer Travis Beacham and he discussed what's in store for the protagonists of the first movie.

"So we get to follow this love story of two pilots who are now deeply in love and how their love is the thing that either saves or dooms them in the process of fighting this gigantic monster. And like I said, what I'm proudest of really is that it's very much a story about the people inside the Jaeger while still having literally eleven pages of monster fighting", Fialkov said.

Meanwhile, the director also wants to include the highly popular Godzilla to the film franchise and this might just be the formula for them to get the project going. Speaking with Movie Pilot, Del Toro said he is interested in bringing Godzilla to Pacific Rim 3.

"So far with the sequel, what we're writing, what we're creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the fuck out of it. I would love to see a Jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain," he said.
