Oculus Rift Release Date: Virtual Reality is coming closer to our reality with the upcoming release of Oculus Rift. Oculus has sold out of its Rift Developer Kit 2 headsets and won't be replenishing the stock, which sounds like Oculus is getting ready to launch its final consumer version.
Samsung's Gear Virtual Reality is out in the U.S. and techies what to know what separates it from the Oculus Rift for PC.
The Oculus Rift commercial release date is coming and HTC Vive and PlayStation VR promise that this is the next evolution of entertainment and interaction.
Since it was first announced on Kickstarter three years ago, Oculus was acquired by Facebook and part of partnerships with Microsoft and Samsung. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg bought Oculus VR for $2 billion in March 2014.
In May, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said the full Oculus Rift experience will cost about $1,500, the headset sill cost about $500.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey admitted that Oculus Rift could cost more than $350.
"I'm going to be perfectly honest with you. We're roughly in that ballpark, but it's going to cost more than that," said Luckey told Road to VR.
Oculus Rift will about cost upwards of £350. It will be released in 2016. Oculus Touch controllers will coe out after the launch. Gamers can try out the VR headset at retail stores.
The consumer Rift will come with one 2,160 x 1,200 OLED screen, split across both eyes as well as a pair of built-in headphones. It will also include a small camera on a stand that is designed to track head movements to create an immersive, 3D environment.
The Oculus Rift projects two images through the headset's lenses, creating a stereoscopic 3D image, which is virtual reality. The tracking system follows the movements of the wearer's head, and alters the projected 3D image.
"There's lots of spectacle, but I can't name one great story in VR,", director of content development at Venice, California, virtual reality entertainment and technology firm WEVR Ben Miller.
There are also reports that the virtual reality technology may need tweaks to make it more usable, especially for women.
A University of Minnesota study from University Kinesiology Professor Thomas Stoffregen that comes out next March found that the technology causes motion sickness, especially in women.
Stroffregen has been studying the Rift since Oculus VR released an early version in 2013. Stoffregen found for every three men that get seasick, five women will.
"When we get into interactive technologies in general and things like the Oculus Rift in particular, you can no longer say 'Oh, too bad,' because we made it," Stoffregen said.
"Many heated claims have been made about what will be happening with this. We need a 'Why' that will help us to fix it," Stoffregen said, adding that attempts to make a fix have been inadequate. If you are playing a driving video game that shows you going 90 miles an hour around corners, well; you're not going 90 miles an hour around corners," Stoffregen said.
"if you lean into the turn in your video game, then you will in fact be leaning away from stability in the real world that your body actually inhabits."
