DAY6 Rock Out With Excited Fans At SGKStar Festival In Singapore

JYP's first rock boy band DAY6 may have just debuted in September, but their first ever fan meet in Singapore received such hot response that they can certainly be dubbed Super Rookies of The Year.

As the second group headlining the SGKStar Festival which boasted a star-studded lineup including BTOB, SISTAR, MONSTA X and GOT7, DAY6 did not disappoint despite being new in the industry. Fans from around the region including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Korea flew in for the fetival and to show their support for the young stars.

Comprising of six members - Sungjin (Leader), Jae, Junhyeok, Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon - the group debuted with the EP 'The Day.' Steering away from the typical K-pop idol route, DAY6 have won the hearts of fans in Korea and internationally through their music and unconventional promotion strategies.

The SGKStar Festival was only their second overseas show, and the members of DAY6 were evidently surprised at such a large turnout and at the endless screaming by their ardent fans. At one point, their passionate fans rushed up to the barricades despite it being a seated event and some were standing on their chairs whilst chanting along to their song. It startled the members and had Jae commenting, "Are you guys allowed to do this? Ok, be careful!"

Even before the show started, fans were already cheering upon seeing the sextet up on the unlit stage getting ready with their instruments. The fan meet started off with '이상하게 계속 이래 (Out Of My Mind)' and had fans screaming their lungs out as though it was the encore stage.

They sang a total of 10 songs including two encores, with a good mix of their mini-album tracks and their own rendition of popular pop songs. The fan meet's host, DeeKosh, praised DAY6's rock cover of the Wonder Girls hit "Nobody," saying that it could even beat out the original version.

What's a fan meet without games and fan interaction? Lucky fans had the opportunity to get up close with the members of DAY6 who have been standing behind their instruments since the start of the night.

The first game was called 'Identity' where selected fans were blindfolded and had to identify the member who whispered into their ear. DAY6's showed their cheeky nature as they distorted their voice to cause confusion. The second game was a fusion between 'Broken Telephone' and 'Pictionary' where a word/message is passed down through drawing. Laughter erupted as DAY6 showcased their artistic skills. Wonpil's abstract drawing of an elephant had Jae exclaiming, "Explain yourself!"

Just like their debut track, "Congratulations," there was much to be happy about during the fan meet. Fans returned the love and fan service showered on them through their various fan projects, including hand-held banners and a fan-made video for DAY6.

The biggest surprise was a birthday cake specially prepared for Young K whose birthday falls on Dec. 19. Fans sang the birthday song in unison and had Young K exclaiming, "You guys are amazing, do you know?" It was also a double celebration for Young K as he revealed that his parents were present in the audience that night, and it was his father's first time to be watching him perform.

The night ended on a high note with each member taking some time to thanks their fans. Although not all the members are fluent in English, their heartfelt words certainly melted fans' hearts. The most memorable one being Junhyeok's: "[in English] Sorry I don't speak English very well, only Korean. [in Korean] This is our first time here in Singapore. I'm happy to be here to perform. It was something I couldn't even imagine. And today is my mother's birthday. I'm going to work very hard and earn a lot of money so I can invite her to my shows. I love you (fans) as much as I love my mother!"

DAY6 proves that they are a promising rookie group with much talent and certainly one to look out for. We wish them all the best and looking forward to new music and tours from them!
