Honoring the cream of the crop in the South Korean film and television industries, the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards held its 55th edition last May 1, Wednesday, at the Coex Convention and Exhibition Center in Seoul.
Taking the Daesang or Grand Prize for television is veteran actress Kim Hye Ja for her role in the recently-concluded JTBC drama, "The Light In Your Eyes." For its fim counterpart, Hallyu star Jung Woo Sung bagged the award for his impressive performance in the drama film, "Innocent Witness."
Meanwhile, A-list actor Lee Byung Hun took home the Best Actor for TV award for his lead role in the period drama series, "Mr. Sunshine." The Best Actress for TV trophy was handed out to "Sky Castle" star Yeom Jung Hwa.
The same TV drama and its cast earned four more accolades including Best New Actress (Kim Hye Yoon), Best Supporting Actor (Kim Byung Chul), Best Director (Cho Hyun Tak). The show, which follows the lives of elite housewives in a luxurious residential area, is currently the highest-rated K-drama in cable TV history. Its peak rating according to AGB Nielsen is 23.78 percent.
The covered Best Drama award went to TVN's "My Mister," starring IU, Lee Sun Kyun and Lee Ji Ah. The series, which also bagged the Best Script trophy, center on the lives and sufferings of middle-aged brothers and a skeptical woman. One of its main casts, IU also won the V Live Popularity Award for Female (The male counterpart went to EXO's D.O.).
In the film category, Lee Sung Min was named Best Actor for his role in "The Spy Gone North," which was hailed as this year' Best Film. Meanwhile, the Best Actress award was given to "Miss Baek" star Jan Hi Min. The movie also earned awards for Best New Director (Lee Ji Won) and Best Supporting Actress (Kwon So Hyun).
For helming the musical drama film, "Swing Kids," Kang Hyung Chul was recognized as the Best Director.
Other awards like Best Short Play and Style Icon were also presented. The 55th Baeksang Arts Awards was hosted by Suzy, Park Bo Gum, and Shin Dong Yup.
