Netizens are debating whether it's inspiration or plagiarism after a fan noticed the resemblance of rookie boy group NOIR and EXO's music videos.
The debate started when a fan, who claimed to love both groups, created a thread on Twitter with uploaded screenshots from NOIR's "Lucifer" official MV and EXO's "Monster" music video.
In the thread, screen-capped images capturing the similar scenes from the MV were posted, comparing the uncanny similarities of the videos. From the table scene, lighting, effects, and scenarios, netizens claimed that one wouldn't be able to deny the identicality.
The post trended and was also shared on Pann, a Korean online community. And looking at the replies under the thread, some were supporting the original uploader with their own screenshots from the two music videos.
Due to this, some netizens think that the newly-released track of NOIR was copied from EXO's "Monster," which was released in 2016.
However, NOIR fans, who are called Lumiere, refuted the claims, saying that fans shouldn't be attacking NOIR as it was clearly not their fault, given that the one who decides their MV concepts are their agency.
Furthermore, NOIR fans questioned the uploader, who, for them, seemed neither a fan or EXO nor NOIR. They believe that this shouldn't be called "plagiarism" but "inspiration" rather as EXO is not the only K-pop group who has done the concept.
Setting the tension down, both are amazing groups, which are actively promoting in this new K-pop era. NOIR, which debuted in 2018, is a nine-membered group with equally talented members - Yeonkuk, Yunsung, Junyong, Hoyeon, Seunghoon, Siha, Minhyuk, Siheon, and Daewon.
Before debuting, some members joined Mnet's "Produce 101," including members Yunsung, Yeon Guk, and Ho Yeon. Despite not debuting supposedly in "WANNA ONE" after being eliminated (Yun Sung left due to health issues), their appearances opened a new door for their success.
On April 24, they released their official MV for their title track, "Lucifer," which is included in their 4th mini-album "UP THE SKY." Afterward, they set their hot return on April 27, wherein they featured their angel-devil concept.
Not long after their return, they immediately faced a backlash. Fans are hoping that people will support the group despite the heated debate on plagiarism.
There are several reasons to stan the group, and these include their mystical concept, embodying darkness and mysteriousness. Starting from their debut track, "Gangsta," the K-pop rookie group wishes to follow the footsteps of the global group BTS and also hoped to work with them soon as their idols when it comes to K-hip-hop and gangster image.
