These are the 10 Most Popular K-Pop Groups for People Over 50 Years Old
10. Girls' Generation
Girs' Generation ranked 10th on the list, with 1.9% of the people saying they liked the group!
Girls' Generation debuted under SM Entertainment in 2017 and is known as "The Nation's Girl Group" for its influence in the spread of the Hallyu Wave. Their breakout song, "Gee," was MelOn's most popular song of the 2000s and is still a popular song among K-Pop fans. The group has debuted in the Japanese music scene and into the American market. The idol group has two sub-units: Oh!GG and Girls' Generation-TTS.
GG currently consists of Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun. They used to be a nine-membered group, but Jessica left the group in 2014 due to conflicts between her and the group's schedules. In 2017, Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Seohyun decided not to renew their contracts with SM Entertainment. Despite that, they are still members of the group.
9. Shinhwa
Shinhwa ranked 9th on the list, with 2.1% of the people saying they liked the group!
Shinhwa is the oldest group on the list, debuting back in 1998. The group was initially under SM Entertainment but later created its own company in 2012 called Shinhwa Company. The group found success in 1999 with their sophomore album "TOP" and are considered veterans in the industry.
Shinhwa is known to be a group that managed to maintain a successful career despite leaving their original agency. Though they had to overcome the legal battle with SM Entertainment over their group name "Shinhwa," the band was able to flourish and is the longest-running boy band in K-pop history.
8. SHINee
SHINee ranked 8th on the list, with 2.9% of people saying they liked the group!
SHINee debuted with five members (Onew, Jonghyun, Minho, Key, and Taemin) in 2008 under SM Entertainment. Dubbed as the "Princes of K-Pop" by numerous media outlets, the group has been praised for their contributions to the Hallyu Wave. SHINee has been included in the Forbes List of Korea Power Celebrity in 2014 and 2018.
Additionally, SHINee has been praised as one of the best live vocals in the industry and is also known for their intricate and synchronized choreographies. They are widely known for upping the standard of K-Pop dances.
In December 2017, member Jonghyun passed away in an apparent suicide. Despite talks and rumors of dismantling the group, the four remaining members of SHINee decided to stick together. They are currently on a hiatus as members Minho and Key are still partaking in their military service. Member Taemin is the only member who has yet to enlist and is currently active as a soloist and member of SuperM. Onew is the first member to have completed his mandatory military service.
7. IU
IU ranked 7th on the list, with 2.9% of people saying they liked her!
IU debuted in 2008 under LOEN Entertainment, now known as Kakao M. She found breakthrough success following the release of "Good Day" in 2010, which spent five consecutive weeks on the Gaon Digital Chart. Additionally, "Good Day" was ranked as number one on Billboard Magazine's 100 Greatest K-Pop Songs of the 2010s. She has been dubbed as "Korea's Little Sister." She is active as a singer-songwriter and actor.
6. TWICE
TWICE ranked 6th on the list, with 3.6% of people saying they liked the group!
TWICE is the youngest idol group on the list, debuting in 2015. TWICE was formed by the JYP Entertainment survival show in partnership with Mnet "SIXTEEN," where seven of the sixteen participants would be chosen. In the finale, though seven girls were already selected, Park Jinyoung decided to add two more members to make the group nine.
Tzuyu was added to the team for being the audience's favorite throughout the show, and Momo - who was eliminated in a previous episode - was chosen for her dance skills by the A&R team and the trainers. They joined Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Dahyun, Mina, Chaeyoung, and Sana.TWICE debuted in 2015 and achieve breakthrough success with "Cheer Up."
5. EXO
EXO ranked 5th on the list, with 5.3% of people saying they liked this group!
EXO debuted in 2012 initially with 12 members divided into two sub-units, EXO-K, who sang in Korean and promoted in South Korea, as well as EXO-M, who sang in Mandarin and promoted in China. Throughout their years as a group, the Korean government officially awarded the group the title "The Nation's Pick."
EXO has been hailed as one of the biggest boy bands in the world, with media outlets calling them the "Kings of K-pop." The group's current line-up is Suho, Kai, Chanyeol, Sehun, D.O, Xiumin, Baekhyun, Chen, and Lay. EXO is on a temporary hiatus as members Suho, D.O, and Xiumin participate in their mandatory military service. Lay is actively promoting in China.
4. TVXQ!
TVXQ! ranked 4th place, with 6.5% of people saying they loved the duo!
The group debuted in 2003 under SM Entertainment. Though initially a five-piece group, three members had filed lawsuits against SM Entertainment in 2009, making TVXQ a duo. Though already popular in Korea and Japan, they gained international popularity in the late 2000s with "Mirotic," which is now known as one of the most popular K-Pop songs in history.TVXQ is one of Asia's most successful music acts and is often dubbed as "Asia's Stars" and "Emperors of K-pop."
3. BIGBANG
BIGBANG ranked 3rd place, with 6.7% of people saying they loved the group!
BIGBANG debuted in 2006 under YG Entertainment. Though originally a five-member group, Seungri retired from the industry and the group in March 2019 following his strong "Burning Sun" scandals. They are now active as four members. BIGBANG is known as one of the most influential artists in influencing the K-pop industry and is praised for being the pioneers of the Hallyu wave internationally. They are known as the "Kings of K-Pop."
2. Super Junior
Super Junior ranked 2nd place, with 7.0% of the people saying they loved the group!
Super Junior debuted in 2005 under SM Entertainment. The group has been dubbed as "Kings of Hallyu Wave," thanks to their contributions to the spread of the Hallyu Wave worldwide. They gained international recognition for their single "Sorry, Sorry" in 2019.The group currently consists of Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun. Sungmin is now an inactive member of Super Junior.
