Previously, SBS announced on Sept. 22 the date of airing of the music show Gayo Daejeon may be canceled to follow the government COVID-19 mandate. However, it will be held both online and offline. The good news included in the announcement is that BTS is confirmed to participate in the said event!

The SBS Gayo Daejeon will be held on Dec. 25 in Daegu, a place that has been dubbed as the "Model Quarantine City" of South Korea. BTS Suga's hometown has shown an incredibly efficient response to the COVID-19 infection spread and has been able to curb the infection rate as far down as possible. The theme of this year's SBS Gayo Daejeon is "The Wonder Years."

It is a televised music festival for newer fans who may not be aware of the importance of the Gayo Daejeon hosted by SBS. It is broadcast by the SBS annually at the end of each year. The program first aired in 1997 and has been giving awards to musical artists up to 2006. It then went on hiatus and was revived in 2014.

The categories included from 1997 to 2006 were the Grand Prize (Daesang), Main Prize (Bonsang), Rookie Award, Rock Award, Hip Hop Award, Dance Award, Trot Award, Ballad Award, R&B Award, Professional Awards, SBS Producer's Award, Popularity awards and other awards (which included varied categories every year) such as Special Achievement Award, Live Performance Award, Fashion Leader Award, Soundtrack Award, Live Performance Award, and Indie Band Award.

2014 saw a revival of the award ceremony, and the winners from that year were as follows:

  • Album Grand Prize: Overdose by Exo-K and Exo-M
  • Song Grand Prize: "Some" by Soyou and Junggigo
  • Top Ten Artists: EXO, Girl's Day, Akdong Musician, Ailee, SISTAR, 2NE1, Apink, Beast, Taeyang, INFINITE
  • Rookie Award: WINNER
  • Best Male Singer: Taeyang
  • Best Female Singer: Ailee
  • Best Male Group: EXO
  • Best Female Group: 2NE1
  • Global Star Award: 2PM
  • Best Band Award: CNBLUE

It was reported that SBS might be taking a break from holding the year-end music show after RED VELVET's Wendy's unfortunate accident and hospitalization during her solo rehearsal. The accident took place due to negligence on the stage directors and the crew, so RED VELVET had to cancel their appearance on the show.

However, the show was still conducted on Dec. 25 at Gocheok Sky Dome with the theme of "Touch." The performers for the night included Chungha, AOA, Apink, Astro, BTS, GFriend, GOT7, ITZY, Mamamoo, Monsta X, N.Flying, NCT 127, NCT Dream, NU'EST, Oh My Girl, Seventeen, Stray Kids, Twice, and TXT.

This year, the scale of the festival's attendees are likely to be reduced due to Government safety regulations, so the final song featuring all idols, which is a key characteristic of the SBS Gayo Daejeon is probably not going to be possible as it would be a health hazard for that many idols to be gathered on the same stage for a collective performance.

As the show is going to be available to watch online as well as offline, a wider audience from all around the world might be able to tune in to the big night. BTS is gearing up for a comeback, and the group is expected to perform their latest songs and show never-seen-before performances from their upcoming album, "BE" on SBS Gayo Daejeon 2020.

We wish all the artists the very best and hope for the safe success of the event!
