WSJN's Yeonjung commanded silence and admiration from the judges as she performed a spine chilling rendition of the 2018 BTS hit "Fake Love" on the latest episode of MBN's "Lotto Singer."
On Saturday (Nov. 14) episode of the entertainment program, Yeonjung from Cosmic Girls (WSJN) went on a darkened stage dressed in a white dress and focused on her with a single spotlight. As a piano solo introduced the song, she performed a choreographed routine that slowly led her to the microphone - with only her vocals, the instrumentals, and the visibly stunned judges.
Despite being the youngest participant in the "Lotto Singer" Group C bracket, the WSJN maknae established herself as among the strongest vocalists present. Even her co-competitors at the sidelines can't help but express awe as she turned the rock/ hip-hop BTS track into a soulful ballad.
After taking a moment to recollect themselves, the "Lotto Singer" cast praised Yeonjung's performance. "It's great to see that someone born in 1999 is such a great vocalist," they noted. "We want to see the stage one more time."
WSJ's Yoo Yeon-Jung
Yeonjung is the main vocalist and the youngest member (maknae) for the 13-member girl group WSJN under Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment. She began her career as a talent representative of Starship Entertainment in the Mnet reality-survival show Produce 101. Together with Shim Chae-eun and Kim Tae-ha, later known as Momoland's Taeha, the three talents joined the program. Yeonjung ended at the eleventh place, debuting as a member of IOI.
In 2016, Yeonjung was revealed as the thirteenth member of Cosmic Girls, while she was still an IOI member. In 2017, she made her acting debut with a cameo role in the fantasy series "A Korean Odyssey."
In 2019, Yeonjung participated in the tvN reality survival competition V-1, which pitted vocalists from different girl groups in the search for the "Vocal Queen." The competition included VENUS' Jung Da-Kyung, Cherry Bullet's Bora, Gugudan's Nayoung, and more. Yeonjung emerged victorious at the season finale after beating Dreamcatcher's Siyeon.
Fake Love, BTS' 2018 "Impressive Fusion"
"Fake Love" is BTS's 2018 hit that appeared in their third Korean studio album, "Love Yourself: Tear," as well as their third Korean compilation album "Love Yourself: Answer" and the latest "Map of the Soul: 7 - The Journey." The song was written by Bang Si-hyuk, credited as "Hitman" Bang, who was also the founder and co-CEO of Big Hit Entertainment. He co-wrote the song with Pdogg and BTS' RM.
The track features elements from emo hip hop, grunge rock, rap-rock, and electro-pop in a darker and more mature environment, with the lyrics discussing a love once thought to be fate but turns out into something fake.
Dam-young Hong, writing for The Korea Herald, described the song's musical style as something that "offers an overwhelming sense of darkness and maturity." US-based music magazine Rolling Stone called the guitar riffs of the song to 80's rock band Def Leppard, calling "Fake Love" as "an impressive fusion, simultaneously bruised and bruising" as it entered the magazine's top 50 best songs for 2018.
