WJSN CHOCOME, the Cosmic Girls' first sub-unit, has recently finished its activities for "Hmph!," its debut album.
The girl group sub-unit - composed of Soobin, Luda, Yeoreum, and Dayoung from WSJN's thirteen-member roster - has concluded their successful album launch on MBC's "Show! Music Core." The members performed the album's title track of the same name, sporting a uniform that suits Music Show's outdoor evening stage, and taking K-Pop fans on a uniquely bright and charming number.
In a statement released by Starship Entertainment, WSJN's talent management agency, the members expressed their gratitude for their first unit promotion's success. The girls said: "We're so happy to finish our first unit activity well. Thanks to all your love, we were able to enjoy our activities so much."
The members also admitted that they were "nervous at first because we challenged an unconventional concept with "Hmph!" but thanks to the support of many people, we became more confident."
"We have finished our sub-unit activities, but we'll show you various sides as WJSN later, so please support us! We're also very grateful to the people who expressed love for our unit, especially our Ujung," the members added, with Ujung being WJSN's official fandom.
WJSN CHOCOME departs from the main girl group, which debuted in 2016 and delivered dreamy music and innocent visuals, by presenting a fresh and live concept which led to incredibly positive attention even before the sub-unit debuted on Oct. 7.
Since then, CHOCOME has only grown to be loved by fans with their song's catchy and unforgettable melody. The sub-unit also created a fun and easy to follow steps for "Hmph!" The members showed it in a few special collaboration stages, with Moon Seyoon, Norazo, and Kim Youngchul praising the girls' energy and chemistry.
Prior to their "Show! Music Core" performance, WJSN has also made appearances on several South Korean music shows, including MBC Every1's "Weekly Idol," JBC's "Knowing Bros" and "Civilization Express."
In a recent article by Jeff Benjamin, writing for the U.S. magazine Forbes, he wrote: "The saxobeat-tinged disco-pop "Hmph!" is a bubbly blast of youthful aegyo cuteness with its accompanying music video producing visuals that are both insane and insanely fun." He added that while "Hmph!" is "as catchy as it gets," its members all shine in embracing the concept. He also praised the catchy chorus, the easy to follow choreography, and the wildly colorful costumes that only highlight how cute the members are.
Benjamin also likened WJSN CHOCOME with other hit subnits in the past: Orange Caramel from After School, Oh My Girl Banhana, and Gugudan's OguOgu. However, he added that the WJSN sub-unit has "something additionally special going for them."
The subunit's first single album was announced on Sep. 22, followed by a statement from Starship Entertainment confirming the debut and releasing the schedule on the same day. On Sept. 25, official concept photos for "Hmph!" revealed that the members would be Soobin, Luda, Yeoreum, and Dayoung. Their main group, WJSN, is a girl group jointly managed by the Korean Starship Entertainment and the Chinese Yuehua Entertainment. They first debuted on February 25, 2016 with the EP "Would You Like?"
