Hyerim Confesses Her Insecurity after Seeing TWICE Jihyo on First Day as JYP Trainee

Former Wonder Girls member Hyerim shared about her first day as a trainee under JYP Entertainment and mentioned she felt insecure immediately after she saw TWICE's Jihyo.

On the latest episode of KBS 2TV's "On Dream School," aired on Nov. 29, Hyerim opened up about her experience when she was still an idol trainee. She shared that ever since she was still young, she loves to dance and sing."After school, instead of studying, I spent more time dancing and singing in front of a mirror, and I dreamt of becoming a girl group member," the singer said.

The former Wonder Girls member said that after hearing the news that JYP was holding an audition in Hong Kong, she decided to challenge herself and try out. She then revealed that she had to leave her family and friends behind and go to Korea all by herself.

"But the reason I was able to do it because I wanted to become a singer come what may," she stated.

The Korean star further stated that during her trainee days, not all of it was happy. "I can still remember my first day as a trainee. It was Valentine's Day, February 14, 2007. I cried on my very first day of training," she added.
Hyerim then explained that she thought she was the prettiest and the best dancer when she was back in Hong Kong. She revealed, "But as soon as I enter the practice room on my first day, everyone was so much better and prettier than me."

The singer then mentioned TWICE's Jihyo in particular and shared, "TWICE's Jihyo was also there that time. Her eyes were so much bigger than mine. I thought I had the biggest eyes among the trainees, but her eyes were even bigger. She was so gorgeous and very talented."

"So, I started to feel really insecure, and I felt like I became very small straight away. My self-esteem plummeted. I felt like a fish in a small pond that was moved to a big ocean."

Despite initially feeling disheartened, Hyerim's story still had a happy ending. She put in a lot of effort as a trainee and successfully became part of the girl group Wonder Girls in 2010.

Woo Hyerim, commonly referred to as Hyerim, is currently a singer and actress in South Korea. She was born in Seoul, but her family moved to Hong Kong, where she resided for 14 years. In January 2010, she was introduced to be a new member of the all-female group Wonder Girls, replacing Sunmi, who chose to focus on her studies. The band officially disbanded in January 2017, but Hyerim stayed as an artist under JYP Entertainment.
