Now that 2020 is over and 2021 is here, it is time to look back at all the amazing artists who shined last year. With that, Genius Korea has unveiled the results of their Year-End Korea Chart. Let's take a look at who made it to their top girl groups of 2020 list.
The list is compiled by Genius Korea community moderators. All the girl groups mentioned in their top girl groups chart were active in 2020. Another factor they look into to determine the top girl groups of the year are the total page views of an artist and their concurrent page views via lyric searches on the platform, Genius.
BLACKPINK, who is currently known as the biggest girl group in the world, sits at number one on Genius Korea's year-end chart. This year has been the busiest in BLACKPINK's career. On April 22, 2020, BLACKPINK collaborated with Lady Gaga for the song "Sour Candy", which was released on the former's studio album "Chromatica". In June, BLACKPINK made their first debut in a year and two months with "How You Like That", a pre-release single to their first full-length album.
In July, BLACKPINK released their second pre-release single, "Ice Cream", which features American singer Selena Gomez. This marks their second collaboration with a Western artist in 2020 In Oct. 2020, BLACKPINK finally released their much-anticipated first full-length studio album "THE ALBUM". The same month of the album's release, Netflix released their BLACKPINK documentary, "BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky", which covers the four years since their group's debut in 2016.
The group that sits at number two is the CUBE Entertainment girl group, (G)I-DLE. In April, the group released their third extended play, "I Trust", with the lead single "Oh my god". In conjunction with their release, the girl group signed with Republic Records to promote in the Western market.
In August, (G)I-DLE released their first single album "Dumdi Dumdi", with the lead single of the same name. Upon its release, "Dumdi Dumdi" ranked as the second best-selling girl group single album in history. Members Miyeon and Soyeon reprised their roles as Akali and Ahri in K/DA for the song "The Baddest" and "More".
The third top girl group on Genius Korea's chart is JYP Entertainment's ITZY! In March 2020, ITZY released their second extended play "It'z Me" with the lead single "WANNABE". The EP debuted at number one on the Gaon Album Chart, making it ITZY's first number-one album in South Korea. It also debuted at number 5 on Billboard's World Album Chart, making it ITZY's highest-charting album in the United States.
On Aug. 17, 2020, ITZY released their third extended play "Not Shy" with the lead single of the same name. The group was praised for lyrically shifting to singing about love, while all their past comebacks have all focused on themes of independence. The EP debuted at number one on the Gaon Chart, making it their second release to top the said chart.
