On Monday, Jan. 4, South Korean media news outlet Newsnack released an article in which they accuse BLACKPINK member Jennie of getting fat. Keep on reading to learn more.
In the article, the publication points out that BLACKPINK's Jennie was gaining weight, causing people to worry about her. The news outlet brings up a photo Jennie had shared to her personal Instagram account on Saturday, Jan. 2, to greet BLINKs a happy new year.
In the photo, Jennie is seen wearing a black see-through dress, her hand blurred, making people think she was moving while the photo was taken. The publication claims that people started worrying about her face, which looked more plump and chubby than in her past photos.
According to Newsnack, people commented on her photo, pointing out her weight gain, saying that her cheeks were much bigger than before. It was also pointed out that the female idol was getting "fatter," which was causing people to worry about her health.
However, the publication immediately received massive backlash, with many saying that Newsnack was falsely claiming that fans were worried about Jennie's weight gain. People are saying that they cannot see any unnecessary weight gain. People have pointed out that there are little to no comments on Jennie's Instagram post saying she gains weight.
Others have said that even if she does gain weight, there is no issue with it due to how tiny and slim she naturally is. People have stated that it would be more worrying for Jennie to lose weight instead and that she deserved to be praised and loved if she does gain weight. The publication received major backlash for making her appear too fat when she is still extremely slim. Many agreed that the only time they would be worried about Jennie gaining weight as if she suddenly became obese or was experiencing health issues.
Newsnack has not released a follow-up article nor a statement concerning the backlash. Jennie nor YG Entertainment have also not commented on the situation.
Currently, Jennie and the rest of BLACKPINK are preparing for their upcoming online concert "THE SHOW (YG PALM STAGE - 2020 BLACKPINK: THE SHOW", which is slated to be held on Jan. 31, 2021. The connect is a collaboration with YouTube music and will feature the girl group performing many of their songs from debut to their most recent full-length album "THE ALBUM". The concert was originally scheduled to be held on Dec. 27, 2021, but was rescheduled due to new COVID-19 pandemic health guidelines enforced in South Korea.
Previously, BLACKPINK released their first full-length studio album "THE ALBUM" on Oct. 2, 2020, with the title track "Lovesick Girls". "THE ALBUM" peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and UK Album Chart, making BLACKPINK the highest-charing K-pop girl group on both charts. The girl became the first-ever million-seller Korean girl group with "THE ALBUM", selling 1.2 million copies in less than a month. The group also released their Netflix documentary, "BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky" on Oct. 14, 2020, which covers their career from their debut until 2020.
