Before joining Starship Entertainment, he was a trainee under Special K Entertainment and was one of the members of a boy band called Nu'bility. Unfortunately, Nu'bility didn't make its official debut in spite of holding several events. I.M then joined Starship Entertainment and trained for two years. While he was a trainee, he took part in Mnet's survival show, "No Mercy," where the winning contestants will be given the chance to debut in the label's hip-hop boy group, MONSTA X.

Luckily, I.M managed to be included in the final lineup despite him being a late addition to the program. In May 2015, MONSTA X release an extended play titled "Trespass," marking its debut in the K-pop scene. A year after, I.M released his very first solo mixtape titled "Who Am I?" featuring Yeseo. It was followed by the launch of his other mixtapes: "BeMyFriend" with bandmate Joohoney and "Horizon" with ELHAE.
