IU Shares Reason Why She Wrote 'Celebrity'

IU recently dropped a new song titled, "Celebrity," which serves as a pre-release track for her upcoming fifth full-length album. In a recent episode of IU TV, the female soloist revealed the reason she wrote the single.

On Jan. 27, IU launched its new track "Celebrity," together with its music video. The idol took part in composing the song, alongside Ryan S. Jhun, Lauritz Emil Christiansen, Chloe Latimer, Jeppe London Bilsby, and Celine Svanback. This pre-release song is considered an electronic pop genre with hints of tropical house. IU herself wrote the lyrics of the song.

IU talks about the inspiration behind "Celebrity"

But how did the female artist come up with her new song? On a recent episode of IU TV, behind-the-scenes footage of IU recording the music video for "Celebrity" was unveiled. The K-pop diol can be seen chatting and hanging out with her staff on set.

IU then disclosed the reason she wrote "Celebrity," wanting for it to be a track that will provide positivity and support to everyone who is struggling because of their difference. She stated, "I wanted to write a song that conveys a message of support. We get alienated or blamed for being different most of the time. But being different makes us unique, and that gives us the value of existence. So, I wanted to express that in a quite cheerful message."

The female soloist went on to share the creative process behind the composition of the song. She detailed, "After I came up with the key phrase, 'Star painted with a left hand,' everything else quickly followed with a lightning speed. It's a star, but it's not an evenly painted star. It appears somehow different, and from a particular point of view. It may look strange and imperfect. It's that kind of thing."

Previously, it is said that IU's inspiration to write "Celebrity" is her friend. Although her name was not mentioned, the K-pop star said that her friend often drew attention for her broad clothing choice and tastes, diverse talents, and timid nature. However, others see her as a weird person for it. Hence, IU wrote the single based on what she would like to tell her friend.

IU's "Celebrity" becomes an instant hit

Meanwhile, upon the release of the song, it quickly soared to the top of Korea's major real-time charts such as Bugs, Genie, and FLO. It even ranked No. 1 on Melon's 24Hits chart in only three hours of its release - this is a certain impressive feat as it reached the top within a few hours even though the ranking is calculated based on the song's 24-hour activity.

One day after IU's "Celebrity" was out, the song took over all major music charts, attaining a certified all-kill. This means that the singer's latest track hit No. 1 on the daily and 24Hits charts of Melon, daily and real-time charts of Bugs and Genie, VIBE's daily chart, and iChart's and FLO's real-time charts. Then, on Jan. 31, "Celebrity" has achieved a perfect all-kill in Korea after the single topped the iChart weekly chart beside the other Korean music rankings.
