2017: The Passing of SHINee's Jonghyun

In December 2017, Jonghyun had rented an apartment in the Gangnam district for two days. He checked in on Dec. 18 at around 12 noon KST.

On the same day at 4:42 p.m., Jonghyun's older sister, Kim So Dam made an emergency call reporting that she believed Jonghyun planned on committing suicide after receiving messages from the singer with words such as "say I did well" and "last goodbye."

At 6:10 p.m., responders found Jonghyun unconscious in his apartment and was immediately brought to Konkuk University Hospital while going under cardiac arrest. Receiving emergency CPR treatment, he was proclaimed dead after failing to regain consciousness at 6:32 p.m, at 27 years old.

According to officials, they believed he passed away from either inhaling smoke or toxic fumes after discovering coal briquettes burnt on a frying pan in Jonghyun's apartment.

Jonghyun's family did not wish for a post-mortem to be performed. His death was ruled as a possible suicide.

On Dec. 19, Jonghyun's funeral was held. Two funerals took place, one for immediate family, friends, relatives and the other for fellow celebrities and fans.

Fans outside of South Korea also paid tribute to the SHINee member, holding public gatherings with flowers, candles, pictures, messages and more.
