Bang Si Hyuk Reveals How Much They Invest to Train a Trainee for a Year at HYBE

HYBE, previously Big Hit Entertainment, went from being an unknown and small company to one of the best in the world. From birthing award-winning superstars BTS to Tomorrow X Together and ENHYPEN, the company is only growing and getting better.

Of course, the main reason for the company's success is because of their idols. It is not a secret that before a group makes their debut, they have to undergo rigorous training for several months, which can span up to years. In order for companies to train their trainees, they are expected to invest a heavy amount of money.

Bang Si Hyuk, HYBE's founder, and CEO reveals in an interview with a foreign media outlet how much they invest in a single trainee per year.

According to the CEO, HYBE invests an average amount of 120 million KRW (approximately $107,000 USD) per year on a single trainee, with 100% of all the fees covered by the company. In addition, when a trainee makes their debut, they don't have to repay the company and can immediately start earning money.

Bang Si Hyuk also shares that when they have a debut team formed, the trainees will live together in a dorm for at least a year and a half before their official debut. During this time, the debut team is required to do a peer review in a span of three to six months - where they make decisions such as deciding on who makes the best leader for the group, their roles in the group, and what aspects they want to improve in.

HYBE's curriculum for its trainee costs a lot more and takes longer as compared to other companies. Bang Si Hyuk explains that it is because not only do they train their trainees as singers, but also prepares them for their social lives, caring for their physical and mental health, and also holding mentoring programs. "We're not a [formal] educational institution, but we try to do our best as a member of society," said Bang Si Hyuk.

In addition, HYBE's Trainee Development Team includes in their training program a "listening to music" portion, as there are occasionally some trainees who have yet to identify and figure out the kind of music that they like whole-heartedly.
