Lil Uzi Very Mourns GFRIEND's Disbandment on Twitter

On Friday, May 21, fans noticed that American rapper Lil Uzi Very changed his profile picture to be a group photo of GFRIEND. It appears the male rapper has caught wind of the girl group's disbandment, as he tweeted out a tweet of the GFRIEND's name, as well as numerous emoticons (emojis) expressing sadness and anger.

Lil Uzi Very is a known BUDDY and has been a fan of the group since 2015. The rapper first tweeted about the group on Sept. 9, 2015, when he informed fans that he loves GFRIEND and K-pop. He proceeds to compliment the girl group's great dance moves and beautiful voices.

On May 13, 2019, Lil Uzi Vert gushed over GFRIEND on Instagram Live. He said that he does not care if people do not know who GFRIEND is, nor does he care if people think they are older than they actually are, if they got plastic surgery, if they are "not real people," and more. He stresses that he loves GFRIEND and K-pop as a whole.

On Oct. 29, 2019, Lil Uzi Vert shared photos of GFRIEND's teasers from their "Fallin' Light" comeback to Twitter. In his tweet, he tagged GFRIEND's official Twitter account accompanied with the emoji of a man touching his head.

His last tweet about GFRIEND was on Nov. 20, 2020. The rapper revealed that he was listening to GFRIEND's song "Mago" and once again commented that he loves GFRIEND.

GFRIEND's Disbandment

On Tuesday, May 18, a number of South Korean news outlets released articles claiming GFRIEND had disbanded due to failed contract renewal discussions. That same day, Source Music released a statement confirming all the members of GFRIEND would leave the company on May 22 after failing to agree on terms for contract renewal. Source Music's statement did not mention if the girl group had disbanded.

On Friday, May 19, the members of GFRIEND — Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji — all shared handwritten letters to their official Weverse account. In their letters, they confirmed that GFRIEND had disbanded.

Prior to disbanding, GFRIEND's last comeback was back on Nov. 9, 2020, with their third studio album "Walpurgis Night" and the title track "Mago."
