IU's 'Celebrity' Selected as 'Best Song' by Billboard Korea, 'LILAC' Chosen as the 'Best Album'

IU's "Celebrity" and "LILAC" have been recognized as the best among the songs and albums dropped within the first half of 2021.

On July 1, Billboard Korea revealed the songs, albums, and singers that performed well on the Billboard K-pop 100 chart from January to June.

Among the tracks, IU's "Celebrity" has been selected as the "Best Song" in the first half of 2021. Meanwhile, "LILAC" was picked as the "Best Album" in the same period.

Why is IU Celebrity Best Song in the First Half of 2021?

According to Billboard Korea, the song that stayed the longest at No. 1 on the K-pop 100 chart in the first half of 2021 is IU's "Celebrity."

Following its release on Jan. 27, "Celebrity" quickly debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, dethroning BTS's "Dynamite."

IU's "Celebrity" topped the Billboard K-pop 100 chart for seven weeks, after Brave Girls' "Rollin'" took over the No. 1 spot for two weeks.

IU later re-claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard chart after releasing her "LILAC" album. The title track also called "LILAC" ranked first for four weeks.

This means IU stayed on the top of the Billboard K-pop 100 chart for a total of 11 weeks within the first half of 2021 (26 weeks). The remaining 15 weeks were alternately occupied by Brave Girls and BTS.

Brave Girls' "Rollin'" took first place on the Billboard chart for six weeks, while BTS's "Dynamite" and "Butter" secured the first spot for five and four weeks, respectively.

The very moment it was dropped on January 27, IU's "Celebrity" immediately swept Korea's major real-time charts, such as Bugs, Genie, FLO, and MelOn 24Hits.

It is a particularly remarkable milestone for the song to reach No. 1 on MelOn 24Hits in just three hours, as the tracks are ranked is based on streaming and downloads that are collected from the past 24 hours.

IU's "Celebrity" also achieved a perfect all-kill after topping all daily and real-time rankings of all Korean music charts.

IU LILAC Best Album in the First Half of 2021?

In addition to "Celebrity" being the "Best Song," IU's "LILAC" has been regarded as the "Best Album" in the first half of 2021.

According to Billboard Korea, all 10 songs from IU's "LILAC" debuted on the K-pop 100 chart, including the title track of the same name. As mentioned above, "LILAC" spent a total of four weeks on the Billboard chart.

Billboard Korea also revealed that IU's past songs re-entered the chart and occupied 22% of the rankings.

"LILAC" is IU's new best-selling album with 344,018 copies sold on the Gaon Chart as of March. With this release, the female idol has become a million-seller. Adding the sales of "LILAC" to her previous album sales, the singer has already surpassed 1,300,000 copies sold in South Korea.

Over on the Hanteo Chart, IU's "LILAC" also sold more than 300,000 copies. This is her first album to surpass 300,000 copies sold on the platform.

Apart from "LILAC," Billboard Korea also stated that there are two other notable albums in the first half of 2021, and these are SHINee's "Don't Call Me," Sung Si Kyung's "Si Ok," and Epik High's "Epik High Is Here."
