According to the BTS members, they didn't plan on releasing another single. However, as the pandemic is prolonged, they decided they needed a summer song.
Lyrically, the song doesn't contain a heavy message as it is meant to be a song that is easy to listen to, and compared to "Dynamite," "Butter" focuses more on showing each members' charm and their "smooth like butter" charisma.
