HYBE Artists Dominate Japanese Music Market with Album Sales and Certifications This Year

HYBE, formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment, is taking the lead in the Japanese music market and has emerged as a leading player in the Korean Wave overseas.

According to the Recording Industry Association of Japan, back on August 10, BTS' "Butter" and ENHYPEN's "Border: Hakanai" received a platinum certification for selling over 250,000 units. Because of this, HYBE has recorded a new feat of acquiring a gold disk certification every month of this year so far, except back in March, as none of their artists had an album release.

BTS' single CD, "Butter," which was released on July 9, the superstar group's hit summer song, became certified with a gold disk platinum certification for having exceeded the cumulative sales volume of 250,000 copies within a month of its release.

The CD version of "Butter" receiving a gold disk platinum certification marks the third certification BTS received this year, following the Japanese version of their album "The Best of BTS," which received a gold certification in February, and their compilation album, "BTS, THE BEST," which received a million certification in June.

ENHYPEN's Japanese debut single "Border: Hakanai," which was released just last month on July 6, had recorded over 350,000 album sales in less than a month, receiving platinum certification.

So far, all of ENHYPEN's album releases this year, including their second mini-album "BORDER: Carnival," which was released in May, had received the gold disk certification.

Another artist of HYBE who is dominating the Japanese music market is SEVENTEEN. The 13-member group's Japanese single, "Hitorijanai," had earned the double platinum certification back in April when it surpassed 550,000 copies sold.

More recently, their eighth mini-album, "Your Choice," which was released in June, had accumulated more than 250,000 album copies sold, earning them then platinum certification.

BTS' brother group, TXT, is also popular in Japan. TXT's first Japanese album, "Still Dreaming," and their second regular album, "The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE," had both received a gold certification in January and June, respectively.

HYBE Artists Have a Cumulative Album Sales of Over 2.8 Million in Japan

With that, a total of nine of the albums and singles released by HYBE's artists had received a gold disk certification by the Recording Industry Association of Japan this year.

So far this year, a total of 15 K-Pop artists have received a gold disk certification, with HYBE accounting for 60 percent of that with the nine releases. In particular, BTS, SEVENTEEN, and ENHYPEN are the only K-Pop artists to obtain a million, double platinum, and platinum certifications.

Meanwhile, HYBE is expected to continue dominating the Japanese music market with their artists in the second half of the year, especially with TXT preparing for a comeback with their second repackaged album, "The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE," on August 17.
