tvN's "Mom is an Idol" and its mentors caused some to raise their eyebrows for their treatment of first-generation legends.
In particular, After School Kahi, Jewelry's Jung Ah and former Wonder Girls Sunye appeared on stage for the first time alone following childcare. While many are impressed by their skills as icons, the mentors presumably treated them more like "outdated" rookies.
'Mom is an Idol' Draws Backlash for Treating Legendary Idols Like 'Outdated Rookies'
In the show, the first-gen idols showcased amazing performances in front of fourth-gen stars, vocal trainers and popular singers in the current music scene. Among them, Park Jung Ah sang Jewelry's "Superstar" who appeared for the first time in about 12 years.
Her nostalgic music selection and stable vocals caught the eye of viewers, but the return is a harsh assessment.
"It's the same as 10 years ago. That's the problem," Singer Park Sun Joo said stated. Vocal trainer Han also compared the singing style of first-gen idols to idols these days.
When After School Kahi also showed her charisma and unique girl crush vibe, the star also gained poor assessment on her singing skills instead.

As a result, viewers are embarrassed by the evaluation method that halves the impression and the overly strict standards. People questioned whether the harsh evaluation was essential.
"They are legends," "This is not a survival show," "Why are you treating them like rookies," commenters wrote.
Moreover, the three mothers initially implied that they joined the reality program to show their kids how cool their moms are, but in this case, "Mom is an Idol" treated them as just old-fashioned singers.
On the flip side, other judges including Bae Yoon Jung suggested that the title should be "Mom is a Legend," given that the participants are already stars and not trainees.
