On December 17, Girls' Generation Yuri was embroiled in a controversy over her remarks in MBC's reality survival show, "My Teenage Girl."

MBC Reveals Behind-The-Scenes Clip of 'My Teenage Girl': The Truth Behind SNSD Yuri's Absurd Judging Criteria Controversy
Yuri was initially criticized for what she announced as the drop-out trainee among participants Lee Jiwon and Lee Seung Eun.
"(We) didn't choose her in the first round. (Seung Eun) doesn't stand out when you're in a group. We need a member to attract fans, and the two (Jo Soo-i and Lee Jiwon) can play that role," Yuri stated.

Viewers then pointed out in the audition program that it is not right for participants to pass for reasons other than their skills, then criticizing Yuri. However, immediately after the controversy circulated on SNS and media outlets, MBC revealed more of it through a new behind-the-scenes video.
Contrary to the broadcasted episode, Yuri in the clip praised Lee Seung Eun.
"She has grit and temperament. She has a cute image, but her skills are charismatic and unexpected. She will probably survive somehow," Yuri said..
But Young Ji and the other judges disagreed, emphasizing that Jiwon has the star quality who can make fans turn to her - something that can't be learned just like singing and dancing. Thus, Yuri didn't eliminate Seung Eun because she favored Jiwon, but they dropped Seung Eun after a deliberate discussion with other judges.
MBC Criticized for 'Evil-Editing' SNSD Yuri, Staff Releases Apology Statement
After the behind-the-scenes release, "My Teenage Girl" and MBC were criticized for "evil-editing" and lost public's trust.
The scene in question where Yuri mentioned "fan attraction" did not even appear in this video. It is also unclear at which point the broadcast was edited and whether the behind-the-scenes were shown as they were.
Regarding the controversy, the production team stated, "As a result of the interim evaluation, Yuri chose Lee Seung Run, but her acceptance was changed to Lee Jiwon during the discussion with trainer teachers. We sincerely apologize if we made viewers feel uncomfortable because we couldn't convey the entire context properly during the editing process."
Attention is focused on whether "My Teenage Girl" will be able to "discover and foster global girl groups" for its original purpose without the stigma of "evil-editing."
