What is BoA up to Now? A Look into the Current Activities of the 'Queen of K-pop'

BoA, who is dubbed as the "Queen of K-pop", remains active in the Korean entertainment industry even after 21 years since her debut, releasing new songs and appearing on several TV shows as a judge or coach. Recently, she has been announced to debut in SM Entertainment's girl group for the first time.

As 2021 comes to an end, let's find out what the female idol has done in the past 12 months.

About BoA, SM Entertainment's First Soloist

Kwon Boah, professionally known as BoA, is the first solo artist to debut under SM Entertainment. Notably, she is the youngest idol to enter the K-pop industry during her time, releasing her debut album "ID; Peace B" in South Korea at the age of thirteen.

BoA also made her solo debut in Japan under Avex Trax with her debut album "Listen to My Heart" in March 2002. This album marks the breakthrough of her career, becoming an RIAJ-certified million-seller and topping the Oricon Chart, the first album by a Korean artist to do so.

The "Queen of K-pop" went on to release more Korean and Japanese albums, which all became successful in respective countries, recording thousands and millions in album sales. She impressively became the first non-Japanese Asian singer to have two million-selling albums in Japan.

In May 2006, BoA renewed her contract with SM Entertainment until 2012. At that time, it was announced that she had a shareholding the agency of 100,000 shares (approximately $1 million).

The female idol entered the U.S. music market with SM Entertainment USA managing her activities. She debuted with the American single "Eat You Up" in October 2008. She even made her Hollywood movie debut in the dance film "Make Your Move 3D," where she played the character Aya.

BoA started to participate in music production at SM Entertainment and receive television roles in 2013. She then appeared in several musicals in the following years, since 2016. She has also become a part of a television production of various TV shows in Korea including Mnet's "Produce 101 Season 2."

As of 2021, BoA remains an artist and a shareholder at SM Entertainment. This past July, it was reported that she acquired 6,000 more shares of the label. Her total shares of SM Entertainment have now become 8,153.

The "Better" singer also acts as a non-executive director of SM Entertainment. She has previously shared that her role offers help to junior artists who are having a hard time communicating matters with the agency as well as guiding them emotionally.

This 2021, the female idol wasn't as active in the music scene as before. But she did release a new Japanese single, titled "My Dear," to celebrate her 20th anniversary in the music industry.

BoA appeared on a few TV shows, one of which is Mnet's "Street Woman Fighter" where she played the role of one of the judges. The program aired from August to October this year.

Additionally, the female idol acted as the main host of her own show, "Nobody Talks to BoA," which is broadcast via V LIVE.

On Dec. 27, BoA was unveiled as a member of SM Entertainment's supergroup GOT the beat, the first of the label's Girls On Top project. The new girl group will release a hip hop and R&B song called "Step Back" on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. KST.
