Gaon Chart Mistakenly Excludes Kang Daniel and ITZY from Million Seller Artists List, Releases Statement

Gaon Chart Excludes Kang Daniel and ITZY on Its Million-Seller List

The Korea Music Contents Association, which releases the Gaon Music Chart, revealed a list of artists who debuted after 2011 and have sold at least one million albums on January 7.

As soon as the list was published, fans noticed that two artists who sold over one million albums were not on the list - ITZY and Kang Daniel.

When the incomplete lists spread online, rumors began to circulate that the two artists did not sell over one million on Gaon and they had returned copies. Because of this, fans immediately called out Gaon to correct its mistake and update the list quickly.

Then on January 12, Gaon Chart released a statement apologizing for its mistake and then corrected the list:

"Hello, this is Gaon Chart.

We confirm that the following artist data is missing from the press release of Gaon Chart's cumulative album sales:

- (Solo) Kang Daniel cumulative album sales: 1,412,081

- (Group) ITZY cumulative album sales: 1,436,805

We apologize to the artists and fans.

Please refer to the table below for the correct data.

The press release has also been corrected and is being redistributed."

Both the artists now appear on the tables, Kang Daniel placed at No. 2 among other solo artists and ITZY at No. 20 among K-pop groups.

ITZY and Kang Daniel both debuted in 2019, this makes their charting in the million-seller category a remarkable milestone.

In August 2020, Kang Daniel reached 1 million total sales with his EP "MAGENTA" and released "YELLOW" in 2021.

Meanwhile, ITZY reached 1 million sales with their latest album "Crazy In Love" in October 2021.

Gaon Chart Holds 'We Pick! Awards 2021'

Gaon Chart teamed up with Instagram to hold the "We Pick! Awards 2021," an awards ceremony that ranks the charts with the songs of the featured artists.

"We Pick! Awards" is a unique awards ceremony that ranks the charts only with the songs of the artists who appeared and announces the winning songs. The winner is selected through fan voting before the awards episode.

In particular, the fanfiction TOP5 was calculated by adding up the number of likes and comments on the releases posted on Instagram, the amound of releases by fans with the song during the voting period, and voting results on the Gaon Chart website.

Fans who participated in the "We Pick! Awards" showcased a warm response, garnering a total of 9,399,204 likes, 100,262 comments, and 2,717 releases.

The general manager of Gaon chart, Choi Kwang-ho, planned the "We Pick! Awards," he said, "We prepared this content with Instagram to create an awards ceremony where singers and fans can communicate and truly enjoy by creating charts by artists only for the artists who appeared. I hope that you will enjoy watching it."

The "We Pick! Awards," which aired for five days through Gaon Chart Facebook Premiere, from December 20 to 24. It started with ITZY on December 20, TREASURE on December 21 and 22.

Furthermore, artists of different genres will appear including Baek A-Yeon and Jung-Yeop on December 23, and Stray Kids on December 24. Each artist will reveal the behind-the-scenes of the selected songs.

The winners were released through Gaon Chart's official Instagram account after the broadcast for those who missed the episodes.
