BTS and EXO Tie as Most Awarded Artist in Seoul Music Awards History

The "31st Seoul Music Awards" winners have been revealed, and the list includes BTS and EXO. With their new awards, these two boy groups have become the most awarded artists in the history of the said awards show.

EXO and BTS Become Most Awarded Artist in the History of Seoul Music Awards

On Jan. 23, the 31st Seoul Music Awards was held at the Gocheok Sky Dome, with AOA Seolhyun, Boom, and Kim Sung Joo as the event hosts.

This Korean music awards ceremony gives Daesang (Grand Prize), Bonsang (Main Award), Best Album, Best Song, World Best Artist Award, Popularity Award, and more major and minor awards.

Among the "31st Seoul Music Awards" winners are BTS and EXO, two of the top boy groups in the music industry. One of them took home three trophies, while the other claimed one award.

In particular, BTS won three awards, such as World Best Artist Award, U+ Idol Live Best Artist Award, and the Bonsang (Main Award).

This is the eighth time that BTS secured a Bonsang (Main Award) at Seoul Music Awards since 2015, while it's the first time they received the two other awards.

Meanwhile, EXO managed to win the "K-wave Popularity Award" for the fifth time at the 31st Seoul Music Awards. The nonet becomes the first artist to bag the "K-wave Popularity Award" five times in history, extending their record as the act with the most wins under the said category.

With their latest awards, BTS and EXO tied to become the most awarded artist in the history of Seoul Music Awards. Each boy group now has a total of 23 wins.

In addition to that, EXO and BTS have also won the most Grand Prizes in the history of the awards show, with four each.

EXO's and BTS' First Award and First Daesang at Seoul Music Awards after Their Debut

Between BTS and EXO, the latter artist is the first to make their debut. EXO initially debuted as a 12-member boy group under SM Entertainment in April 2012 with their first single "MAMA." Meanwhile, BTS debuted in June 2013 with their first single album "2 Cool 4 Skool."

EXO's first appearance at Seoul Music Awards is in 2014. And, during that time, the boy group bagged the New Artist Award, together with Ailee, B.A.P and Lee Hi.

In 2014, EXO managed to win their first Daesang at the awards show. It was their fifth Grand Prize of the year as they also won Daesang at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, MelOn Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards and KBS Music Festival.

As for BTS, the septet first appeared at Seoul Music Awards in 2014 when they won Best New Artist, along with Lim Kim and Crayon Pop. Their first Daesang was in 2018 during the 27th edition of the awards show.

Notably, since EXO won the Daesang in 2014, they consecutively took home the same award until 2017. And, since BTS received the Grand Prize in 2018, they also bagged the award four years in a row until 2021.
