MAMADOL Sunye Shares Reason for Joining 'Mama the Idol'

The Feb. 9 broadcast of MBC's "Radio Star" featured several guests, including MAMADOL Sunye, musical actress Kim So Hyun, singer Lee Young Hyun and more.

During the recent episode, Sunye talked about "Mama the Idol," a tvN variety show that gave legendary stars who are now mothers another chance to sing and dance as an idol. The participants, who were once active as actresses or girl group members, received training and formed a new girl group.

MAMADOL Sunye, who was best known as a member of the girl group Wonder Girls, got married in January 2013 and welcomed her first child in October of the same year. She gave birth to her second child in April 2016 and third child in 2019, making her the mother of three adorable daughters.

During those years, she took a break from the entertainment industry to pay more attention to her family. She then returned to the stage for the first time in nine years on tvN's "Mama the Idol."

"Mama the Idol" formed the new girl group MAMADOL, consisting of former Wonder Girls Sunye, Jewelry Park Jung Ah, After School Kahi, Baby V.O.X Re.V Yang Eunji, Hyun Jyuni, and Byul.

On MBC's "Radio Star," MAMADOL Sunye revealed why she chose tvN's "Mama the Idol" as her comeback show. And, it turned out that she wasn't supposed to be there as she initially turned down the offer of appearing on the show. However, according to her, she carefully thought about joining the program for a month, and she eventually decided to participate.

Sunye explained that she joined "Mama the Idol" because she thinks it would be a good opportunity to start over as a singer. "Before, I promised that I would continue to sing until I can sing," she added.

The MAMADOL member said that she felt anxious when she stood on the stage in front of the mentors. She also had that strange yet familiar feeling during the first filming and thought she was finally back.

MAMADOL Sunye also shared her experience the first time she danced again after her years of hiatus. She said she was out of breath and struggled a lot while practicing the choreography.

MAMADOL Debuts with First Digital Single "WooAh HIP"

"Mama the Idol" girl group MAMADOL debuted this past Jan. 28 with their first digital single "WooAh HIP." In the group, former Wonder Girls member Sunye earned the main vocalist position. Their debut was a success as the song was seen landing on multiple charts.

On Jan. 28, MAMADOL's "WooAh HIP" entered several daily charts in South Korea. It debuted at No. 30 on Bugs, No. 243 on Genie, and No. 344 on MelOn. The following day, the track debuted at No. 82 on the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart.

"WooAH HIP" even entered at No. 14 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart for the week ending on Feb. 12.
