On March 9, a video of SEVENTEEN Mingyu playfully interacting with a female staff became a hot topic on various online portals. While many have no qualms about it, others say the closeness of the two makes them feel uncomfortable.
Video of SEVENTEEN Mingyu's Closeness To Female Staff Sparks Discussion
Over Twitter and YouTube, a clip of Mingyu seemingly hugging a female staff circulated online.
In the 30-second video, Mingyu and the staff were seen together at backstage. According to the uploader, it was filmed at KBS Gayo Daechukje on December 17, 2020.
While the other SEVENTEEN members, such as S.Coups and Vernon, were also present at that time, the close relationship between Mingyu and the staff was unquestionable, with the idol lifting the latter without hesitation.
SEVENTEEN Mingyu Receives Mixed Reactions – Why is the Video Big Deal?
As soon as the video was uploaded on the internet, criticism for the "Pretty U" singer poured out. People highlighted that the idol's act was not only disappointing but "inappropriate."
K-netz left comments:
"Such an inappropriate behavior for an idol."
"I'm disappointed that you did something irrational to the opposite sex."
"I hope you chose the location for doing things like this," and more.
On the flip side, many came to SEVENTEEN Mingyu's defense, and pointed out there was nothing wrong with his closeness to the staff member.
"Most of CARAT (SEVENTEEN fandom) will not even think Mingyu's behavior is a problem."
"What are you even thinking? This is just common interaction between friends."
"Fans are too obsessed with their idols that even light contact (with the opposite sex) is considered 'inappropriate'."

Amid this issue, some CARATs called for caution as this is not the first time Mingyu was embroiled in a controversy related to women.
In March 2021, the male idol was criticized after he was accused of being a "misogynist."
Critics back then pointed out his collage work was reminiscent of illegal filming as it contained images of a woman with amputated limbs and a man holding a camera, making people uncomfortable.
What do you think of the situation?
Meanwhile, SEVENTEEN announced on March 9 the details of their upcoming Japan Fan meeting.
Pledis Entertainment stated:
"SEVENTEEN will hold 'SEVENTEEN 2022 JAPAN FANMEETING - HANABI' at Saitama Super Arena for two days on May 7and 8."
This will be the first offline performance of the group in the country for about two and a half years following their month-long tour, "SEVENTEEN WORLD TOUR - ODE TO YOU" in JAPAN from October 8, 2019.
