On March 8, SEVENTEEN member Mingyu shared photos of him wearing a red hoodie to Instagram. He captioned the image with a red heart. He shared the images just a day before South Korea's Presidential Election.

Red is the official color of the Conservative Party. Both political parties —the Conservative and the Liberal — have misogynistic stances, the Conservative Party is considered more radical and rigid, with locals stating that they propagate anti-feminist ideas.
Due to the coincidental timing of Mingyu's posts and the Presidential Election, many accused the idol of indirectly showing his support for the Conservative Party. Some even speculated he voted for that party.

The Side Against SEVENTEEN Mingyu
Even if he did not mean to send a political message, people believe that he should have known better. The Presidential Election is the event being talked about most in South Korea, and as an adult, Mingyu should have known better as an idol and as a person of influence.

People believe Mingyu is a grown man responsible for his actions and how they are being perceived. Many hope that women in South Korea who see this continue to stay strong, both because of the election race in South Korea and for Mingyu's actions.
Others pointed out that because it is election week, celebrities do their best to refrain from doing peace signs, wearing blue or red due to the political ties these symbols have.

The Side Defending SEVENTEEN Mingyu
However, some internet users have defended the male idol from backlash. CARATs pointed out that Mingyu likes to match whatever clothing he wears with a heart emoji. Therefore, it is most likely that he only used the red heart emoji because he was wearing a red hoodie that day, not due to political reasons.

Some idols have mentioned that they are barred from speaking about politics in any way. Because of that, they find it hard to believe that Mingyu purposefully wore red to show a political stance.
Others pointed out that simply wearing red is not enough to determine if someone has taken a political stance and believe the timing of the posts could have simply been a misunderstanding. On the other hand, it was noted that other celebrities were seen wearing political colors and were not slammed for their wardrobe choices.
