As mentioned above Ailee was born in Denver, Colorado, but she grew up in New Jersey. She attended Palisades Park High School before transferring to a school in Leonia. She then continued her education in Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, and after her graduation, she majored in communications at Pace University.

However, Ailee dropped out to pursue a career in music. And, so signed with Muzo Entertainment, an independent agency in New York City and New Jersey. As an artist under the company, she collaborated with numerous artists, including Philadelphia-based rapper Decipher and Johnnyphlo.
In 2010, Ailee traveled to Korea to audition for YMC Entertainment. She sang Big Mama's "Resignation" during the audition, and managed to be accepted as a trainee. She made her solo debut two years later, and the rest is history.
