Many K-pop fans probably know Dawn simply as Dawn, but his real name is actually Kim Hyojong. Also, his initial stage name is E'DAWN, which he used when he was still a member of CUBE Entertainment's boy group PENTAGON.

When he was about to debut as a PENTAGON member, the rapper brainstormed what names are better than Hyojong. So, he took the "Hyo" from his birth name "Hyojong" and looked at its equivalent in hanja (a traditional writing system with Chinese characters).

When written in hanja, "Hyo" is "曉" and it means means "DAWN." He combined "DAWN" with "E" that stands for "EAST." Altogether, his stage name "E'DAWN" means "the sun rising from the east at the break of dawn."

The idol then changed his stage name to Dawn when he debuted as a soloist under P Nation to mark his new beginnings and reflect his new identity as a solo artist.

Dawn's Songwriting Credits

Dawnhas shown a great sense of writing, composing, and producing skills since he made his debut as a PENTAGON member. But he first showcased his songwriting and composing skills during "Pentagon Maker," a survival show created by CUBE Entertainment to produce a new boy group, which is now called PENTAGON.

In particular, Dawn wrote and composed "Find Me" for "Pentagon Maker," along with other trainees, namely Jinho, Hongseok, Shinwon, Yan An, who all later became his bandmates.

The rapper was then highly involved in the production of PENTAGON's songs since their debut. A few of his works are "Lukewarm," "Stay Crazy," "Nothing," "Get That Drink," "Runaway," "Pretty Boys," and "Think About You."

The last songs that Dawn wrote and/or composed for PENTAGON are "Naughty Boy" and "Skateboard" from the group's "Thumbs Up!"

Besides PENTAGON, the male idol also wrote and/or composed songs for other artists, including Triple H, HyunA, and OnlyOneOf. He even penned the lyrics for the "Produce 101 Season 2" song titled "Never."

Dawn's Relationship Status

Dawn is currently engaged to female K-pop idol HyunA, who was his girlfriend for six years. He proposed to her on Feb. 3, 2022. The couple have been in a public relationship since 2018, though they started dating in 2016.
