On June 1, SM Entertainment confirmed that aespa would be releasing their second mini-album, "GIRLS," and a lead single of the same name on July 8.

Before the group even started releasing teasers, rumors spread on social media and online community forums that the title track for aespa's upcoming album was leaked. The leaked audio was soon shared on social media, raking up thousands of listeners.

The leak occurred when international fans' expectations of the comeback were skyrocketing, with many discussing what kind of song aespa would come back with this time. Because of that, the leak drew the keen interest of the public.

Many were convinced the leaked audio was legit. However, SM Entertainment soon released a statement, stating that the supposed leaked audio was not for the title track of aespa's upcoming album.

On June 9, it was announced that pre-orders for "GIRLS" surpassed one million copies a week after pre-orders were opened. This makes aespa's official million sellers, breaking their previous record of 401,000 for "Savage."

aespa signed an exclusive deal with Warner Records for overseas promotions on June 1. That same day, the SM Entertainment girl group released the single "Illusion" as a pre-release to their upcoming album.

On June 24, aespa will release their second pre-release single, "Life's Too Short." This marks aespa's first all-English release.

On July 8, aespa will release the mini-album "GIRLS." The album will include aespa's debut single, "Black Mamba," and two other past releases, namely "Forever" and "Dreams Come True." The latter was previously release as a track on the "2021 Winter SM TOWN SMCU Express" album in December 2021.

On April 23, aespa performed at the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival during its second week. For the music festival, aespa performed all their previous lead singles, "Black Mamba," "Next Level," and "Savage." They also performed the unreleased single "Life's Too Short."
