BLACKPINK Becomes Girl Group in the World With Most Songs Hitting 500 Million Streams

On June 20, YG Entertainment announced that BLACKPINK's "DDU-DU DDU-DU" had surpassed 500 million streams on Spotify at approximately 12:10 a.m. KST on the said day. The company commented, "BLACKPINK is the only K-pop girl group with multiple songs having 500 million streams on Spotify. It is all because of their increasing influence in the global music market."

"DDU-DU DDU-DU" becomes the quartet's third song to hit half a billion streams on the platform, following "Kill This Love" and "How You Like That." It is worth noting that "How You Like That" is the first K-pop girl group song in history to obtain the milestone.

Previously, BLACKPINK tied with Little Mix and Fifth Harmony as the girl groups in the world with the most songs-particularly two tracks-to rack up 500 million streams on Spotify. Now, the South Korean girl group has broken the tie.

The YG girl group went on to extend this record after their collaboration song "Kiss and Makeup" with Dua Lipa also hit the 500-million mark on the 20th at approximately 12:45 a.m. KST. This makes BLACKPINK the first-and so far, only-girl group in the world to ever have four songs having 500 million streams on Spotify.

Apart from the three aforementioned girl groups, the only other female groups to accumulate 500 million streams on the music platform are TLC (Tionne, Lisa, and Crystal), Destiny's Child ,and Spice Girls, all of which have one song that attained the mark.

For starters, "DDU-DU DDU-DU" is the title track of BLACKPINK's first mini-album "SQUARE UP," which came out back in June 2018. It features an addictive chorus and a choreography that includes a gun-shooting move, which wasn't part of the initial choreo and was suggested by the members on the day of the music video filming.

"DDU-DU DDU-DU" entered at No. 55 on Billboard Hot 100, and its music video made BLACKPINK the first K-pop group in history to reach one billion views on YouTube. The MV consistently gains more views and makes history even at present. In February 2022, it became the first K-pop group MV to hit 1.8 billion views.
