Key's Past Remarks About SHINee's Pre-Debut Concept in "Keyword BoA" Resurface

In 2008, SM Entertainment launched their five-member boy group SHINee, who took the world by storm with their song "Replay." The members immediately earned praise for their impressive vocal skills- and continue to receive applause today.

SHINee has since been very popular within and beyond South Korea. Their other representative hit songs, aside from "Replay," are "Ring Ding Dong," "Lucifer," "Sherlock," "View," and "Dream Girl," to name a few.

While SHINee debuted as a singing idol group, it wasn't their original concept. Member Key once revealed their pre-debut concept on BoA's "Keyword #BoA" back in 2018, and his remarks were recently posted on a popular online forum, drawing attention once again.

On TheQoo, one netizen made a post titled, "SHINee's Original Debut Concept That Nobody Could've Ever Imagined" and attached several screenshots showing Key telling BoA one of SHINee's pre-debut stories.

Key asked the female soloist, "You know we weren't supposed to be a singing group, right? Because everyone was so bad at singing."

He continued that SHINee originally planned to debut as a group focusing on rap more than singing.

SHINee Key then shared that there was this candidate for their debut song, which was 80% rap and 20% singing. However, Lee Soo Man didn't approve of it as the members had no "swag" while performing it.

Key shared, "You think Lee Soo Man gave it a pass? No. We rapped with no swag at all. As a result, we all agreed to act like that song had never existed."

Because the potential debut song didn't fit the members, they had no choice but to sing "Replay."

"We told ourselves, 'We need to improve our skills to pull off that song called 'Replay,'" SHINee Key further said.

As expected, the members were worried about recording "Replay" as it was generally full of singing, which wasn't their top specialty since they were trained to be a group that focuses on rap.

"When we received the song's demo version, we worried. Then we saw other people doing it, so we thought that we had to match that," SHINee Key shared.

Thanks to their hard work, SHINee released "Replay," which has become one of their iconic songs.
