Hani's Hair in EXID "Fire" MV Blurred Out? Here's the Reason
On Sept. 29, EXID made a full-group comeback in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their debut. Their single album "X" was released on that day, together with the music video for the title song "Fire."
Written and composed by EXID LE (also known as ELLY), "Fire" is a hip hop song that emphasizes the charms of each EXID member. The track compares the group's powerful charisma to Tabasco sauce, and creatively expresses how hot and spicy they are to taste.

Ahead of the album's official release, there were concerns about Hani's hair among the teaser photos. The female idol can be seen wearing braids that were identified as box braids. Several fans voiced their frustration at the hairstyle, considering it a cultural appropriation.
For starters, cultural appropriation is "the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas of one people or society by members of another and usually more dominant people or society."
Because of this, EXID's fans (collectively called LEGGO) hoped that Hani's hairstyle would not be included in the music video.

However, when EXID's "Fire" MV was dropped, Hani was still wearing braids in some scenes- but it was noticeably blurred. It is speculated that the blurring was done to avoid potential complaints about Hani's hairstyle being deemed "cultural appropriation," as well as to prevent the high cost of re-filming those scenes.
In one red-shaded part in the MV, however, Hani's hair was unblurred as an oversight, making the hairstyle visible on screen.
Still, the blurring of Hani's hair in EXID's "Fire" MV received various reactions. Some LEGGOs applauded the decision as it goes to show that their concerns were heard.
But other fans pointed out that, while it is good that an action was made, they should have never let Hani wear that hairstyle in the first place.

There were also fans who said that they also could have just cut out any scene of Hani wearing the braids in the music video.
