Zico made an official apology after numerous K-pop idols called out him for doing THIS. Keep reading to know what really happened.
Zico, the Idol Behind the K-pop Dance Challenge Trend + Sentiments of Other Artists
On October 24, Korean media outlet Insight released an article featuring Zico, who made an official apology to fellow K-pop artists for an unusual reason.
In 2020, Block B Zico took over the internet after creating a new culture that shook the whole music industry with his viral song, "Any Song."
At that time, Zico released a video of him dancing the "killing part" of the dance choreography of his song and later on challenged other K-pop idols to do the dance with him through another clip.
As a result, a lot of celebrities did the dance challenge, and even ordinary people joined the trend through TikTok and YouTube.
However, as doing dance challenges whenever a new release was dropped became a trend, a lot of K-pop stars expressed their worries due to the "challenge" culture, to the point that Zico has to make an official apology to them.
Zico's Apology For Creating 'Challenge' Culture Re-Examined
In the article, the influence of Zico's challenge culture was re-examined through his previous appearance in JTBC's entertainment program, "New Festa." There, Zico appeared and fascinated viewers with various performances such as his hit tracks, "Any Song," "BERMUDA TRIANGLE" and "FANXY CHILD."
After his stage, the MCs introduced Zico as the trend leader of the challenge culture, saying:
"''Any song' is the first song to create the dance culture."
Kyuhyun then asked him:
"Did you expect the (challenge) to do well from the time you made 'Any Song'? Isn't the whole nation copying and making a fuss?"
Zico quickly denied it and responded:
"I didn't know that it would turn out to be successful. I thought I would just use it to promote my song. I didn't know it would be established as part of the promotion culture."
Zico then mentioned how this culture led him to receive criticism, as a joke from other K-pop artists and how he ends up saying sorry.
One of them is Sunmi, who said:
"I'm having a hard time because of Zico. All entertainment companies (after the 'Any Song' Challenge) are having a hard time making the challenge."
To explain this, if an idol release a new song, it is obvious that they will be very busy. But for the idols, they have one more thing to do adding to this long list of works, which is coming up with an engaging dance challenge.
In response, Zico offered his official apology during the broadcast and said:
"Whenever a new song comes out, my fellow singers called me and say, 'Everyone is suffering because of the challenge you made.' That's why I'm apologizing every time a new song comes out.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my apologies to the A&R team and artists."
