Popular 4th-Gen Boy Group Draws Mixed Reactions For Live Vocal Skills in SBS Gayo Daejeon

THIS popular fourth-gen idol is receiving mixed reactions due to his live vocals during his group's performance in SBS Gayo Daejeon.

Here's what happened.

The Boyz x Jaurim's Collab Performance Earns Mixed Reactions For Group's Singing Skills

On December 24, the 2022 SBS Gayo Daejeon, an annual celebration held every Christmas featured a large number of special stages that captivated viewers' eyes and ears.

Among them, one of the much-anticipated collaborations was the performance of Korean band legend Jaurim and the trending boy group, The Boyz. The combination of a band from the 90s and 10s truly delighted fans even before the festival.

However, the excitement from the awaited collab turned into disappoinment after hearing The Boyz's live vocals that caused "pupil shaking" of viewers and K-pop fans.

During the stage, The Boyz Jacob, Younghoon and Hyunjae initially performed a cover of Jaurim's "17171771."

For those who don't know, this song is considered one of the legendary band's representative songs, which is loved by many as of this date.

In particular, the combination of Yuna Kim's unique sound and singing method raised expectations even before its release.

The stage was decent and music fans acknowledge how the trio did their best to give justice to the song. However, some emphasized that there is no single member who perfectly hits the note. Instead, they sound out of tune and the anxious breathing is noticeable.

It was also a regret that the vocal range of the song didn't match The Boyz members' vocals.

Despite this, the highly awaited collab continued with Jaurim appearing together with the K-pop idols and performing their hit single, "Hey Hey Hey."

The performance was lauded and enjoyed by many. However, The Boyz weren't able to avoid the criticism over their vocals that didn't meet expectations compared to Jaurim Kim Yuna's unique sensibility.

DEOBIs Defend The Boyz Following Controversy Over Live Vocal Skills

When the performance was uploaded on various streaming platforms, some raised their brows given the "disappointing" stage of The Boyz in collaboration with Jaurim.

However, The B, hereinafter Deobis (fandom), immediately defended the 97-liner trio.

First, the fandom emphasized that the songs were relatively difficult to sing since Jaurim's songs usually require not only high-quality singing ability but Kim Yuna's unique singing style which made it more difficult to sing for other idols.

Second, the trio did really well, given that they were not even the main vocalist line of The Boyz.

Even some stood up for The Boyz and attested to the songs being difficult to sing.

  • "I think they chose a difficult song."
  • "Even those who are good singers can't achieve Jaurim's songs."
  • "If The Boyz's performance is already as good as this, what more if the main vocal line joined them."
  • "They must have been nervous performing in front of Kim Yuna."
  • "I think the music arrangement also didn't help."
