NewJeans Hanni, a Vietnamese-Australian K-pop idol was ridiculed for THIS reason.
NewJeans Hanni Receives Hate Comments From Some Vietnamese
On February 10, NewJeans Hanni received hate comments from Vietnamese far-right forces for absurd reasons.
In particular, the young idol started being ridiculed when some communist Vietnamese on social media complained about Hanni's nationality. On Twitter, some even started a petition to remove the idol from her group NewJeans.
To explain this, some Vietnamese netizens made unreasonable claims such as:
"Hanni's parents are Vietnamese, but they are anti-communist because they immigrated to Australia."
In particular, Hanni's parents both came from Vietnam, but the idol was born and lived in Australia after her family immigrated there, thus, her Australian nationality. Later on, they moved to Korea to pursue Hanni's dream of becoming an idol.
Another thing that made some Vietnamese frustrated was due to the fact that Hanni doesn't speak Vietnamese that well.
"Hanni was born in Australia, so she can't speak Vietnamese well."
Netizens from Vietnam were hurt that it seems like Hanni isn't "proud" of her roots.
The worst is that Hanni was also criticized for not being a "communist," and urged her to follow what the Vietnamese do.
"Hani should follow (communist) Vietnam."
As the controversy grew on Twitter, Korean netizens joined the discussion and some shared the same sentiments.
- "You (Hanni) should be proud of being Vietnamese."
- "Aren't you grateful? When you travel to Vietnam, you can only hear NewJeans songs."
- "Are you even from the same country?"
Bunnies Defend NewJeans Hanni From Absurd Hate She's Getting
As soon as internet users and fans, especially Bunnies (NewJeans fandom) heard about this issue, they immediately defended Hanni and said:
"Does it immediately make you an anti-communist if your family immigrated?"
Regarding the claim that Hanni can't speak Vietnamese, fans admitted that she's not fluent, but emphasized that the "Hype Boy" singer tries her best to speak as much as she could in Vietnamese just to convey love and support to her Vietnamese fans.
Fans continued that it is also possible for the idol not to know Vietnamese that well since Hanni grew up in Australia which uses English as the medium to communicate with people, so the idol doesn't have many people to practice the language aside from her family.
As for the statement that Hanni should be a communist as well, K-Netz wrote:
- "She's still a teenager, but isn't that too much of a claim?"
- "Should all Vietnamese support the (communist) government?"
- "I'm worried that Hanni will get hurt."
Hanni was born in 2008 and is a dual citizen of Australia and Vietnam. Hani passed the audition in Melbourne in October 2019, moved to Korea and made her debut with NewJeans in July last year after about two years of training in 2020.
In line with this, NewJeans' agency, ADOR, initially said on January 28 that they are doing their best to take legal action against people leaving malicious rumors about members and said:
"We have begun taking legal action against the authors of defamation, insults, false information, and malicious slander posts against NewJeans."
