According to industry officials and media outlets, there are various considerations BLACKPINK might NOT renew their contract with YG Entertainment.
In 2023, BLACKPINK comprised of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa is set to face a contract renewal discussion with YG Entertainment on their seventh year as a team.
However, attention is focused on whether they will join hands with YG again, or decide to let go of the company.
4 Reasons BLACKPINK Might NOT Renew With YG: '7-Year Curse,' Average Age, Fame, More!
According to industry officials as per the Korean media outlet, Sports World, one of the reasons BLACKPINK might not secure another contract with the group was due to the agency's history of disbanding groups after another group is launched.
"If you look at YG's past renewal year, there is a hint. BLACKPINK's debut dates back to 2016. That year is also the time to renew the contract of YG senior girl group 2NE1. BLACKPINK was deployed on August 8 of that year, and 2NE1's team activities ended on November 25 of the same year. As a result, YG did not hold hands with 2NE1 and went all-in to the new girl group BLACKPINK."
This year, a similar trend continues, following the upcoming debut of BABYMONSTER, who coincidentally will be YG's first girl group in about seven years after BLACKPINK.
Secondly, there is their average age. The burden of group activities is formidable as the idol market is getting younger and younger. While a lot of idols such as NewJeans, IVE, LE SSERAFIM have an average age of 18.3 years old, BLACKPINK's combined age was already 26.3 years old.
Third, there is actually no reason to continue their group activities due to their massive individual popularity and fame. Despite being a 7-year girl group, they already proved themselves and elevate the status of K-pop as much as the contributions of other veteran idols.
The media outlet stated that BLACKPINK might follow BIGBANG's path, which only releases albums once in a while and doesn't attend music shows and promotions due to conflicting schedules as ambassadors for various brands in the fashion world.
While is highly possible for the quartet to remain as BLACKPINK, moving forwards, the members might start focusing on their solo and acting careers.
Fourth and last, BLACKPINK is receiving various offers from big and prestigious companies and the members can attain benefits more than what YG can offer.
In the case of Lisa, it was reported that she already received offers from global companies that are willing to pay 100 billion won ($78 million) worth of guarantees to the "MONEY" singer. As she is the only overseas member of the team from Thailand, it may be a sweet proposal for Asian and global paving.
Reasons BLACKPINK Will Possibly RENEW Contract With YG Entertainment
However, there are insiders who are claiming that the chances of BLACKPINK renewing their contract are also high.
One thing is, once the group let go of YG, they can no longer use the team name BLACKPINK, which trademark belongs to the agency.
Also, fans, particularly BLINKs (fandom) strongly believed that BLACKPINK treats the members and YG staff as their family, thus, they will most likely renew.
Another thing, Lisa might continue her domestic activities as a soloist and BLACKPINK member as well as she just recently purchased a 661㎡ (200 pyeong) detached house in Seongbuk-gu, Korea for $6 million, hinting at her desire to live in the country.
