THIS K-POP GIRL Group Is Also On the Brink of Disbanding Following Brave Girls, MOMOLAND ?

Amid contract renewal season of those who debuted in 2016 this year, THIS girl group is worrying fans if what will happen to them following the saddening news of Brave Girls and MOMOLAND's respective disbandment.

'Hitmakers' MOMOLAND & Brave Girls Announce Respective Disbandment

In February, girl groups K-pop enthusiasts suffered two heartbreaking news after two of the most-loved teams MOMOLAND and Brave Girls disbanded after seven years.

MOMOLAND, a third-generation girl group announced that they will be parting ways after all members terminated their contracts with MLD Entertainment on February 15. Prior to disbandment, the sextet was widely known for their hits, "BBoom BBoom" "BAAM" and "I'm So Hot."

The members said in a handwritten letter with the same content:

"After a long consideration, the six MOMOLAND members decided to take a step forward toward their dreams and cheer for a new start."

On February 16 then, Brave Girls comprised Minyoung, Yoojung, Eunji and Yuna who reorganized in 2016, also terminated their contracts with Brave Entertainment after their seventh anniversary.

In 2020, they experienced reverse-driving popularity after the success of "Rollin" and became the new "Summer Queen." Brave Girls wrapped up their official activities with their digital single, "Goodbye" released on the same day.

Brave Girls & MOMOLAND Fail To Break '7-Year Curse,' Will WJSN Follow Them?

Both MOMOLAND and Brave Girls have disbanded after seven years of activities, failing to break the infamous "7-Year curse."

This "curse" is widely known in the idol world as a group's 7th debut anniversary is the most important time to decide on the maintenance and disbandment of the group.
This is after the Fair Trade Commission enacted a standard contract that limits the exclusive contract period for celebrities to up to seven years.

This is why another girl group, which celebrates its 7th anniversary this year along with MOMOLAND and Brave Girls, is worried by fans.

The girl group is none other than WJSN, also known as Cosmic Girls.

In particular, WJSN is a 13-member team that debuted on February 25, 2016, and will celebrate its 7th anniversary this year.

The reasons that fans, especially UJUNGs (fandom) were concerned was because Starship Entertainment, the agency, has yet to make a significant position on whether WJSN will renew its contract despite the date.

On February 17, Dear U-Bubble also announced on its official SNS that Starship Entertainment artists MONSTA X, CRAVITY, and IVE will join, but only said:

"WJSN will participate in the future."

Thus, this added to the pessimistic outlook of fans about WJSN's renewal.

Another reason is that netters don't think that all members will decide to stick with the company longer. Despite its increased fame since last year, Starship is criticized for its lack of content and activities for the group, as well as called out the quality of its music releases.

Although WJSN managed to sell more than 100,000 album copies for its special single album, "Sequence," the group doesn't really have a representative song that is considered a huge hit other than their popular songs, "Unnatural" and "As You Wish."

Also, after winning first place on MBC Music's "SHOW CHAMPION" on June 19, 2019, there was no first place in music broadcasting, losing the power to continue their activities.

Lastly, because the number of members is the largest among girl groups currently active with 13, and each member has completely different areas of activities such as acting, musicals, overseas activities, and entertainment, it may be difficult to renew all of them, especially the members who are currently in hiatus.

Nevertheless, fans are still hoping to renew WJSN's contract.

They are responding such as:

  • "I hope you come with good news even if it's not soon."
  • "I'll be shocked if WJSN doesn't renew its entire contract."
  • "I think there's a high possibility of renewing its contract."

Meanwhile, WJSN held a fan concert "CODENAME: UJUNG" in January this year.
