MAMAMOO Hwasa, who's known for her confidence onstage, revealed that she also feels hurt by negative comments about her, especially when people judge her by her outer appearance.
MAMAMOO Hwasa Hurt by Criticism About Her Visuals — How Did She Overcome It?
In a broadcast, MAMAMOO Hwasa looked back on her struggles as a performer due to malicious comments.
On June 8, the latest episode of tvN's "Dancing Queens on the Road" featured MCs Hong Hyun Hee, Kim Wan Sun, Uhm Jung Hwa, Lee Hyori, BoA, and Hwasa before they departed for Yeosu and Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do.
During the broadcast, the deep stories of the five legendary divas that have never been heard anywhere touched viewers' hearts.
In particular, Kim Wan Sun and BoA surprised viewers when they confessed that their self-esteem fell when they perform onstage in the past because they were rather scolded and criticized, not praised.

Kim Wan Sun said:
"What's really sad is that I've never heard a compliment. I always got in trouble when I came down from the stage. So I've never had confidence."
BoA added:
"I want to feel a sense of accomplishment after being praised, but I was only pointed out when the stage was over. I wonder if I was that bad, and my self-esteem gradually fell."
Hearing this, the youngest cast Hwasa revealed that she can also sympathize with the empty feeling that an artist can feel after going up and down onstage before.
Hwasa said:
"There are a lot of times when I feel angry when I'm on the stage or when I'm doing music. I think there is definitely a staircase that leads to the peak as I do music with a bit of spite."
As Lee Hyori delve deeper if when was the time Hwasa felt the negativity the most, the female star selected the time when she unveiled her first solo mini-album, "Maria."
In particular, Hwasa confessed how she felt hurt at the time when people judged and criticized her only by her appearance, more than her personality and skills.
"I always live with a good heart while working hard on music, but people judge me only by my appearance. I guess I was a bit hit with a reality check."
However, Hwasa showed her strong mind by using her anger and frustration instead as inspiration to make a better performance.
"At that time, I didn't think about it whether the result was good or not, and I thought, 'I should just release it all on the stage.' I couldn't solve it for people, so I only had a stage to release my anger and stress."
Listening to this, BoA continued:
"It felt like, 'Isn't it the only time on the stage that no one can touch me? This time is mine.' I think it's killing two birds with one stone."
MAMAMOO Hwasa Shows Affection for Whee In
In the same broadcast, Hwasa then showed her affection for her co-members, especially to her best friend Whee In.
In context, when BoA asked:
"What would it be like to perform with only one person?"
Hwasa didn't hesitate to pick Whee In and recalled how she was the first friend she made when she entered middle school and since then, their friendship has been going on for 15 years already.
"She's the first friend I made after entering middle school. We know each other so well that we don't talk and the two of us can't even say 'I love you.' We don't talk because we know too much."
Hwasa continued:
"I want to look into Whee In's eyes and sing. We never sang for each other except in middle school. We sang a lot at coin karaoke."
