In a broadcast, Yuqi made a shocking revelation about her dream to become an SM Entertainment artist. She later on revealed why she debuted in Cube Entertainment.
In MBC's entertainment program "Radio Star," which aired on June 14, K-hip-hop icon Tablo, singer Lee Jang Won, dancer-choreographer GABEE, and K-pop idol (G)I-DLE Yuqi appeared as guests in the special episode with the theme, "World Stage of the Earth's Marvel."

During the broadcast, the guests talked about their careers. Then, global star Yuqi recalled her pre-debut days, highlighting her beginnings before rising as one of the most popular idols in the music scene.
"I was a member of a dance club in China between 2011 and 2012 in middle school and after we organized a K-pop concert, that's when I realized my dream. I became a big fan of Super Junior, so my goal was to really join SM Entertainment."
Since then, Yuqi decided to pursue the idol path and started participating in SM Entertainment auditions in Beijing. While she failed her first three auditions, her fourth audition changed her life forever.
At the time, she didn't only pass SM, but received a love call from Cube Entertainment, too!
"I participated in the audition for the fourth time and there was also an audition for Cube Entertainment so I went to both, but I got a call from the two at the same time."
Naturally, Yuqi, who is a huge fan of Super Junior would definitely choose SM Entertainment, but SURPRISINGLY, she chose Cube Entertainment!
Explaining, Yuqi revealed that Cube had offered her something that became the decisive reason she opted to debut under the company instead.
"I was so worried (because everyone contacted me). SM is my dream, but wasn't there 4Minute-sunbae in Cube? Well, my face is pretty and cute that it matched SM, but my voice is husky, so it's too much suited for Cube."
In addition to this, Yuqi revealed:
"The director of Cube also said, 'If you sign a contract, you can debut next year.'"
Indeed, after officially becoming a Cube trainee in 2017, Yuqi was able to debut in (G)I-DLE in 2018!
Did (G)I-DLE Yuqi the Make Right Decision of Choosing Cube Over SM?
Following the broadcast, Yuqi became a hot topic among K-pop fans, discussing whether the idol made the right decision to choose Cube over SM.
Many of her fans agreed that Yuqi's top-tier beauty suits SM the most, but a lot were happy that she chose Cube that fits her vocals and skills. In fact, the group is currently one of the most popular 4th-gen groups with various hits, such as "TOMBOY," "Nxde," "Queencard," and more.
Fans also think she was smart in choosing a company that guaranteed her debut, especially since the time when she auditioned was in 2014, or the time when SM Entertainment had just launched Red Velvet. The next girl group they debuted was aespa in 2020!
