These five K-pop groups and artists are so popular among the younger generation that they are dubbed as "elementary school presidents"!
Here Are 5 Korean Artists Known As 'Elementary School Presidents'
B1A4
One of the earliest groups that were given the modifier, "Elementary School President" was B1A4, a five-member boy group that debuted in 2011.
The second-gen team was known for their boyish and friendly concept, which became their "main weapon" among other idols.
Before leaving the team, Jinyoung who worked as the group's producer created earworm tracks such as "What's Happening?," "Baby Good Night," and Lonely.
BTS
Amid the strong and manly concepts of boy groups during the second-gen era, BTS is one of the teams that introduced the "school uniform" concept and incorporated it into their songs and music videos.
Their transition from hip-hop to pop songs captured the attention of students due to its rather lighter vibe that is easier to sing along with. Some of their most popular songs among kids were "Boy With Luv," "Dynamite," "Butter" and "Permission to Dance."
iKON
While most of the aforementioned boy groups established their position with consecutive hits, there was a time when iKON rose as "Elementary School President" with one song alone.
iKON debuted in 2015, but it was in 2018 that they became a huge hit thanks to their song, "LOVE SCENARIO."
Its popularity truly shook the nation that not only elementary students were singing the song but it was also taught among kindergartens for their "group singing."
Due to this song, iKON rose to first place in the chart, won daesang and attained its most viewed MV with more than 600 million views.
Lee Mujin
Among Korean solo singers, Lee Mujin obtained his position as "elementary president" after captivating young students with his song, "Traffic Light" released in May 2021.
"Group singing" was so popular among elementary school students that it became popular even with teenage fans.
This phenomenon was unusual in that Lee Mujin was a solo singer, not a member of an idol group, and above all, the power of the song seemed to be great.
IVE
Last but not least, while most "elementary school presidents" were male idols or singers, IVE changed this norm for being the girl group gaining, the clearest support among elementary school students these days.
IVE is gaining popular love by topping every song released such as "LOVE DIVE," "After LIKE," and "I AM," to the point that the kids' parents are nervous every time IVE makes a comeback.
This became more evident when IVE conducted their first world tour, "SHOW WHAT I HAVE," where fans who filled the auditorium showed a distinctly younger fan base than other idols, and many parents were seen waiting for their elementary school children outside the concert hall.
In other words, IVE proved that it is currently the most influential team for elementary school students.
It is said that Jang Wonyoung's influence, which is called the "trend", was one of the factors why IVE was given the title.
