Controversy arose due to the use of the phrase "love wins." In popular media, "love wins" is used as a slogan in pride parades for sexual minorities. Many believed the use of the phrase as the song title, which is assumed to be a love song between a man and woman, was inappropriate and diminished the meaning the LGBTQ+ community has attributed to the phrase.
While some defended IU, saying the song title did not interfere with the original meaning of "love wins," the soloist still garnered some backlash.
