IU Shares Inspiration in Writing 'Shopper,' Soloist Discusses Topic of Dreams, Desires, More!

IU is currently trending on social media for her content, which fueled the hype for her highly anticipated album "The Winning." After releasing her pre-release track "Holssi" on February 16, IU's interview video for "The Winning" was dropped on February 19.

There, the top soloist elaborated her inspiration for each song, as well as shared her personal thoughts that resonated with the track's meaning. Eventually, at the 7:00 mark, IU was asked to give her insights on the song "Shopper."

IU began to plunge into the desire for certain things or materials, before pointing out people's need to hide their wants. Here's what she said:

IU: "If that's your need, material things are okay. All is okay. It doesn't need to be abstract or material, it doesn't matter, if it's your desire. Want it confidently, that's the message."

IU: "These days, I feel like it's the time where we have to hide our desires and wants more and more. The first thing why I thought I should write this kind of lyrics was because of the dreams of the children these days."

The singer then mentioned the subject of dreams, stating how children tend to limit their aim or profession nowadays due to practical reasons. IU also brought up how she dreamt of various careers when she was young.

IU: "Dreams used to be diverse in the past. Speaking of future dreams, so many professions were mentioned. These days, it's a few professions; celebrity, YouTuber, or an office worker who can receive a very stable salary."

IU: "Of course, those are great professions but in my case, when I was young, my dream almost changed every single day. Some days I wanted to be a designer, a diplomat, a lawyer, or a singer. My dream changed every day, I thought I could do it all."

IU: "It was shocking for me that children were setting importance on practical matters first when it came to their dreams. When you're a child, you have that privilege of having absurd dreams. No one can crush that dream by saying, 'Hey, that's impossible' at that time."

IU then talked about how children always aim for a realistic viewpoint nowadays, as well as adults.

IU: "What's making children so realistic? When they want to have this dream, they say a more realistic answer when speaking out loud. Why do these phenomena occur? It's not just the children, things are getting exacerbated for the adults too."

IU: "No one can blame you for having extravagant and absurd dreams. Dreams are desires and wants in the end, right?"
