A debate ensued among netizens due to S.Coups' exemption from military service, leading CARATs to defend the idol.
Here's what happened.
SEVENTEEN S Coups Defended by CARATs After Idol's Military Exemption Stirs Debate
Earlier on March 1, the exemption of S.Coups from the military was officially announced by agency PLEDIS Entertainment.
The news shocked fans, with some expressing their concern for S.Coups, while others were worried about his performance skills, given SEVENTEEN's energetic choreography.
The reactions varied greatly online, as others were also hesitant to celebrate the exemption due to the injury's seriousness. However, not all were in favor of the exemption. On social media platform X (Twitter), some netizens compared S.Coups' case to other idols' situations.
Netters weren't convinced with the reason for exemption and pointed out other idols who had surgeries but served regardless in other roles such as public service. They specifically mentioned BTS Suga, who went through surgery to heal his torn shoulder labrum in November 2020 and enlisted in September 2023.
Here's how they reacted:
The member of the most impactful group in SK with a cultural merit under his name had his shoulder injury operation, got well and NOW serving their country willingly! This man doesn’t even have the accolades to be exempted like let’s be real here https://t.co/yc2iRFwHGJpic.twitter.com/zquqjtQigE
Dude isn't well enough to serve even as a social worker, but is well enough to fully participate in comeback activities literally next month? is this some kind of a joke https://t.co/C0LgzmpieEpic.twitter.com/iamrB65XBl
Yoongi literally went to have a surgery just so he could enlist. If he wanted to evade, he could have delayed his surgery but what do you know https://t.co/7MEv2PvxCs
Seeing the comparisons, CARATs immediately went ahead to defend S.Coups from the comments. Fans called out those who dragged both idols into the situation and elaborated that their injuries vastly differ from one another. They also pointed out the lack of empathy for S.Coups.

I don't even get why some armys have the audacity to negatively comment about it when Yoongi had to do a different service from his brothers because of a medical issue, too. Like sis? You should have known how hard it is in the first place?? https://t.co/iTtjCXNKY5
Reading qrts and showed me how kpoppers fr lost their humanity like how you hating on someone having serious health issues! Do you think he is happy because he have ligament rupture that would effect his daily life ?
he literally could not walk without assistance until like 2 months ago and y’all expected him to get on the battle field… get real. https://t.co/OntS2wtIyh
If news of someone's enlistment exemption or public service because of potentially life-altering and career-threatening injuries make you think about "privileges" first without invoking empathy, you need to rethink your upbringing. Both of them didn't deserve to witness that hell.

Y'all owe yoongi and scoups the biggest apology. If you are trying to belittle any of their injuries to support your case of who deserved an exemption and who didn't, y'all don't deserve to say that you love your idol because y'all lack compassion and empathy. Hope that helps. pic.twitter.com/K5TxWqGGJD

After sustaining the injuries in August 2023, S.Coups went through a surgical procedure to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee joint.
"S.Coups sustained an injury to his left knee as he was landing during a ball game for a content shoot," PLEDIS shared. "He was immediately taken to the hospital to receive a comprehensive medical examination."
On the day of his military exemption reveal (March 1), the agency classified S.Coups as a Grade 5 individual. In the case of war, Grade 5 individuals are required to perform labor to support the military.
Since his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, S.Coups has gone through rehabilitation physical therapy since 2023. The agency also revealed that further updates regarding SEVENTEEN's activities will be revealed soon.
