What is 'Youth Is Flower'? BIGBANG GD's Artwork Put Up in Seoul Auction
On March 7, the Seoul Auction website revealed that the "King of K-pop's" artwork was submitted under the contemporary art auction, which will be held on March 29.
In particular, the contemporary art piece by Kwon Ji Yong, popularly known as G-Dragon/GD is called "Youth is Flower," which he created seven years ago in 2017.
The art has a dimension of 195.5×45.6cm by 77.0×18.0in and is a modern piece created using a marker and spray paint on steel panels.
G-Dragon's work will be auctioned along with works by artist Lee Bae, also known as the 'Charcoal Artist', and artist Sunwoo Kim, who has presented works with the dodo bird as its theme.
Looking at the K-pop and fashion icon's work, a flower with blue petals with a smiling face at the center can be visualized along with the phrase, "Youth is Flower."
But what attracted the attention of art enthusiasts the most were the blue and pink dots with dripping paint at the top part.
G-Dragon's 'Youth is Flower' Put Up for Auction With Starting Price of 23k USD
Aside from being one of the most legendary K-pop artists and fashion icons in the world, G-Dragon is also well-renowned for being a major figure in the art world.
In 2019, he was named in the "50 Collectors to Watch" selected by ARTnews, a famous American art magazine. The list was formed by consulting expert sources including top dealers, curators, auction house specialists, collectors, and other art-world players.
While he used to put up collaborative work or his collection before for auctions, GD joining this year's Seoul auction is a huge deal as this is the first time that his solo and self-produced piece of pure art has been put up for an auction.
As a result, the estimated price is not specified on the official website and is marked as a "separate inquiry" unlike other works.
But as per inquiry of JTBC News, it was revealed that the starting bid costs as must as 30 million KRW or approximately 23, 000 USD!
While it is not finalized, Seoul Auction expects that the piece will be sold even more than that, then highlighting his power as an influential artist beyond K-pop.
Meanwhile, according to Seoul Auction, the winning price for G-Dragon's work will be determined at the auction at 3 p.m. on March 29th. The work will be on display starting on the 7th at the Seoul Auction Gangnam Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
