STAYC Shares Thoughts on Covering TWICE's 'FANCY,' Reveals Plans for Full Album THIS 2024
On March 15, STAYC was featured in an exclusive interview with NME, where they dished out their thoughts on their output with Spotify Singles. The girl group has released a rendition of TWICE's iconic 2019 hit "FANCY," much to the surprise of SWITHs.
According to the interview, leader Sieun revealed that "FANCY" is one of the songs that inspired the members. Meanwhile, Sumin explained that the song was initially "poppy" and "lovely" upon first hearing, but later became "sophisticated" and that the group had leaned on the R&B path.
Sieun: "This is a little bit different from all the songs we have worked so far, so that's special. As we embark on our journey to become artists, we've always respected what they've done, and we wanted to emulate them."
Sieun: "This song in particular, we loved it while we were practicing becoming what we are today, so this was a really special song to us."
Sumin: "When I heard this (cover) for the first time, I thought it was sort of poppy and lovely, but now I think the song is really sophisticated. For our version (of the song), we leaned more towards R&B and it's a bit cosy."
Sumin: "Since our 'FANCY' is kind of soothing, you can listen to this every day as you're resting or doing chores. I hope this (song) becomes part of your daily life."
Yoon also hoped that by doing an R&B take, fans would be able to view them differently with a new side. On the other hand, Isa discussed the vibe of the original, while J shared which member suits the cover most.
Yoon: "Because we have now taken this R&B spin, we received an opportunity to show off our different spectrum, I would say different sort of in the mellow vocal cords that we have."
Isa: "The original version is energetic, and it has a positive energy, so I thought I should match up to that kind of level."
J: "When it comes to songs that are rhythmic and calm, she (Isa) would suit it right away."
Moreover, Sumin shared her hope to release a full album and declared STAYC's resolve in displaying their versatility in music.
Sumin: "I hope (for us) to release a full-length album. We're versatile artists, so we can explore different genres as well, whether it's ballad or dance songs, we want to show our audience the full scope of the genres we can cover."
