BoA is set to make a comeback with the single "Emptiness" on March 26, 2024. To promote her upcoming release, her label, SM Entertainment, has released several teasers to excite fans about the soloist's new music.
However, eagle-eyed netizens noticed glaring similarities between BoA's teasers and Taeyeon's past teasers for To.X."
BoA Accused of 'Copying' Taeyeon's 'To.X' Teasers
On March 20, 2024, a post titled "Is BoA copying Taeyeon's 'To.X'" was uploaded to a popular South Korean community forum.
The original poster (OP) noted how SM Entertainment was trying to make BoA go viral with her releases, but slammed the label for lacking originality and copying Taeyeon's "To.X." They noted that Taeyeon and BoA are not only under the same agency, but under the same division in SM Entertainment. Therefore, they wondered why they would copy their own junior.
The poster also included photos of both BoA and Taeyeon's teasers.
In both soloists' teasers, they make use of male models with long hair. Both photos show them posing sadly with their male leads, showing a relationship that is falling apart.
Some photos show them leaning in close to their male lead.
While another teaser shows them in the same room but visibly apart. This glaring similarity has raised eyebrows.
Another teaser shows BoA and Taeyeon even posing at the same angle. While BoA is seen leaning against a pillow, Taeyeon is seen leaning her head against a table.
It was pointed out that international fans have flooded BoA's Instagram comment section, accusing her of copying Taeyeon.
K-Netz Debate on Whether BoA Copied Taeyeon
While international fans have accused BoA of copying, Korean netizens are not as sure.
Some believed that BoA did copy Taeyeon, but that it was not BoA's fault. Instead, the blame went to SM Entertainment, with people wondering if they were running out of things to plagiarize that now they look to juniors from the same label.
Others, however, want the post removed. They said it was most likely a coincidence, so it is best not to feed into this narrative.
Some comments read,
- "Is SM running out of things to copy, so they are not copying juniors from the same company center who released her concept not even that long ago?"
- "Remove this, please. She won't be able to chart anyway, so this will just be buried."
- "Do you really think BoA would do that? I am not a fan of either of them, but this whole 'who copies who' debate is so boring. The fans aren't even sharing the same thoughts, so don't feed into this."
- "If you are really a fan, take down this post. It doesn't help either of them."
