BoA Hints at Retirement as K-pop Idol After Exclusive Contract With SM on THIS Date

"K-pop Empress" BoA drew concern after bringing up her contract expiration, and suggesting her retirement from idol career.

BoA Reveals Contract Expiration Date With SM Entertainment — Is She Hinting at Retirement?

The K-pop icon's recent consecutive posts on SNS became a hot topic after she mentioned that she is considering retiring from the music industry.

This came after her cryptic act of deleting all her past Instagram posts before her album release, as well as unfollowing everyone except her deceased brother.

On April 6, the "Only One" singer sparked worries with her remarks hinting at her departure from the industry.

In particular, this started when she took to Instagram and left a confusing message:

"Now that the contract will be over, I guess I can [finish a work out], right?"

Many fans who encountered the misspelled word left by BoA gave various interpretations, such as implying that she actually meant "retirement," rather than finishing a work out.

Later, BoA set her initial post straight and confirmed that she indeed wanted to say "retirement."

Eventually, various claims were exchanged online about the meaning of BoA's sudden mention of retirement, which debuted in 2000 and has been active for 23 years until last year.

With the anxiousness that she will leave the music scene anytime soon, BoA put fans' concerns to rest and attested to them:

"My contract runs until December 31, 2025! Until then, I will happily do my best as singer BoA. So, don't worry my beloved Jumping BoAs (fandom)."

Despite this clarification, speculation poured out again if she meant retiring after the end of her contract, and if this was a hint that she would no longer renew with SM.

Fans are also curious if she will only take a break and start anew under another label, or rather, she will stop as an artist and take on another role, such as being a producer.

BoA's Posts Increase Speculations of Retirement

However, this is not the first time that BoA showed confusing actions hinting at her departure from the entertainment scene.

Earlier on March 20, she caused a frenzy when she abruptly deleted all of her past IG posts as well as unfollowed everyone except her late brother Kwon Soonwook.

While there are fans who explained that she most likely did it ahead of her new single, "Emptiness" released on March 26, she added to the concerns when she captioned one of the photos:

"Will you be okay without me?"

If BoA indeed retires, fans and netizens will express their support for her and comfort the idol that she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone anymore, as she has carried the K-pop scene for over two decades since she was 13 years old.

Thus, fans want her to focus on herself now and do the things that she wasn't able to do before.
