aespa Winter Recuperates Following Pneumothorax Surgery
On April 12, SM Entertainment brought the news about aespa Winter's health status, saying:
"Recently, (aespa) Winter has undergone a pneumothorax surgery and is recovering."
The entertainment company added:
"Since pneumothorax is a disease that is prone to recurrence, we agreed to have surgery as a preemptive measure based on the opinions of the medical staff and after sufficient discussion."
Currently, Winter is still recovering ahead of its group's much-awaited comeback in May.
Expert Explains Nature of Pneumothorax: Causes, Symptoms, More
On April 18, pneumothorax disease expert Lee Hong Gyu, who is also a professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, explained the illness' usual causes, symptoms, and how to avoid it, especially those who are idols and singers.
Professor Lee highlighted that pneumothorax is a disease that could "greatly affect the quality of life," especially if it is too severe.
"When air leaks or flows in through holes in the surface of the lungs, air or gas accumulates in the pleural space (it is normally empty) which leads to sudden pain chest and difficulty in breathing."
Lee highlighted:
"If a singer, idol group, or musical actor develops a severe pneumothorax, it will not be easy for them to sing or perform."
The medical expert also stated that in fact, pneumothorax is uncommon among females. Among women, those who have a thin physique are likely to develop the disease. In some cases, kids get it from their parents.
"Experts explain that tall, thin people lack fat, which reduces lubricating fluid in the body, exposes the lungs frequently to friction, and creates an environment in which pneumothorax is likely to occur."
Professor Lee Hong Gyu also emphasized that while mild pneumothorax could be treated by natural absorption treatment, SEVERE type should consider getting thoracoscopic surgery.
Such surgery required to be hospitalized for 2 to 3 days. Fortunately, there is no major restriction in daily life but it is best to avoid strenuous exercise, lifting heavy objects and violent coughing. Extreme dieting is also prohibited. Lee advised that a balanced diet should take place.
In an isolated case, frequent riding of an airplane could also increase the probability of pneumothorax, especially for those who are already experiencing its symptoms.
With this, Lee advised to have frequent checkups even after surgery as it is most likely to recur.
